The self-titled (and only) release from Archie Whitewater is something of a HIGHLY sought-after diggers/collectors platter. Released back in 1970 on the influential Cadet Concept label, the album mixed rock with complex fusion  backing and a bit of psychedelics for a sound that was not only eclectic, but also revolutionary. The many different styles represented gel together in an uncanny way for an ultimately relaxed listening experience from beginning to end.

Archie Whitewater were a group that was years ahead of its time – a rock combo, but one with real genre-crossing sensibilities that made them perfect for the experimental styles at the Cadet/Concept side of Chess – the same slice of the musical universe that gave us Rotary Connection and important productions from Charles Stepney! The sound here has some surprisingly soulful elements at times – especially the instrumentation, which features some great break moments that get nice and funky, and strands of soulful jazz and blues that really make the music way different than most other groups we can think of – or maybe a bit like a rare elite who shared such visionary territory with Archie Whitewater, such as Shades Of Joy on their first Fontana record. The keyboards and arrangements are as great as the drums – and the vocals have a melancholy undercurrent that's a really refreshing change from some of the overly-postured modes you'd get from other groups in 1970. Titles include the sublime sample cut "Cross Country" – but there's loads of other nice ones with the same stripped-down "Dusty Fingers" sort of groove – and other titles include "Life Is A River", "Home Again", "Lament For The Walking Dead", "Seacoast", "Country To the City", "Friends & Neighbors", and "Mist Of The Early Morning

Can you imagine paying $100,000 for a group and then hiding it away for over a year?" So ran the first line in an article about Archie Whitewater back in August 1970.  "Well, that's exactly what Chess Records did with the group..." Not that Chess's eventual publicity campaign made stars out of the nine musicians in the band. In fact. Archie Whitewater's lone album for Chess's cool spin-off label Cadet Concept, is a best-kept secret among collectors & D.J. club spinners.... 

Copies of Archie Whitewater now sell for upwards of $150. fuelled chiefly by the plethora of funky drum breaks and beats scattered across the album. A quick glance at websites like Popsike reveals copies of the album which have sold for big $$$ and the record is praised by numerous blogs which pride themselves on their crate digging credentials.

CONDITION: The cover: rated: M- TOP COPY, a beauty when you realize how wear-prone this cover is. Stiff and sharp all over, flat & square with 4 sharp corners...the only minor (micro) thing is a tint (can't see it...) delete drill which almost doesn't exist except you can see it in label... After 46 years remains with a fresh appearance, no split seams, no bends, and no writing  ... VERY collection worthy rarity ...

The vinyl: Rated: M- smooth and clear as the sounds within...Clean and glossy with very enjoyable CLEAN audio  ...NO distracting surface problems ...  both CADET labels are clean (delete)
