1968 1969 UNRELEASED FOLKPSYCH DREAMS...
Arthur Lee Harper
MEMORIES
Switzerland - RD Records # 11
Impressive limited edition from several years ago...(hard to find and expensive when first issued) of USA folkpsych dreamer ... an underground cat who made two highly prized albums in 1968 & 1969 ..."MEMORIES" is a double album (2xLP) filled with 17 tracks recorded between 1968-69 that are similar in nature to the highly collected works on the two mentioned albums ("Dreams & Images" & "Love Is The Revolution") ...comes with a cool photo collage glossy color insert.
A masterpiece of introspective and delicate loner folk-based soft psych baroque-pop minimalist venture. Maybe for putting on the stereo on a cold windswept day as one gazes out of teh window and daydreams that one is someone else, decades ago.
Singer/songwriter Arthur Lee Harper billed himself simply as Arthur (no last name) on his first album, 1968's Dreams and Images, and then as Arthur Lee Harper on his second and last, 1969's Love Is the Revolution. It's the same guy who did both records, and he most assuredly has no connection with the famous Arthur Lee who led the group Love.
Arthur, or Arthur Lee Harper, was as mild-mannered a folk-rock singer/songwriter as there was in the late '60s, singing sad songs that emanated fearful uncertainty, as well as slight airs of self-pity and disengagement. If there is a genre of 'ambient folk chamber music' then this would be its prime exponent. Like Love or Tim Buckley there is also a quest to explore different arrangements and instruments with 'Open Up The Door' having a dulcimer sound trying to be like a harpsichord. 'Dreams and Images' introduces mysterious flute melodies. 'Pandora' has a dream like quality with electric piano, cello and an air of strangeness. 'Wintertime' is gorgeous seasonal folk with a simple, direct arrangement of guitar, plucked strings and violin.
