RARE ADVANCE RELEASE WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL...
Original 1969 first pressing in old style unipack gatefold cover of the incomparable Big Mama Thornton, Queen of the blues, a huge influence on Janis Joplin ....
BIG MAMA THORNTON had such an affect on Janis Joplin and her STRONGER THAN DIRT album was made on the heels of Janis & Big Brothers' Cheap Thrills album. However, the album never achieved the success Big Mama had hoped for.
She includes a powerful version of Hound Dog Man and also the show stopping Ball & Chain that had helped Janis Joplin's rise into fame...
Check out her great version of Summertime that Joplin herself had covered so strikingly. The rest of the album is filled with material that is chosen wisely, making for a hell of a solid album...Highlights are all throughout, including, the wailing Catfish, and That Lucky Old Sun -- one of the great songs of transcendent honesty. She lets you feel the truth of life and its burden. One listen and you've "got" the blues, realizing it may never be easy on this earth, but that it is endurable. The very title of this album says this very thing. Further on, Big Mama's version of I Shall Be released, has much the same feel, and is the most interesting arrangement of the song -- maybe even better than Dylan's own version! The track really swings when she belts out "You know, Big Mama, I was framed" = you'll know exactly what she's talking about. She expounds the universal.
The album starts off with the old great, Born Under A Bad Sign, another song that she was born to sing with lyrics that she had lived.
All the songs on this album are good, not a filler in the lot and all are handled by Big Mama with ease, giving that "Big Mama" interpretation; from Funky Broadway to Let's Go Get Stoned to Rollin' Stone to Ain't Nothin' You Can Do. This is her strongest outing in the studio.
Big Mama despite living the blues was never buried in them. On this album, after years of obscurity Big Mama Thornton enjoyed the attention that finally came back to her, rolling up her sleeves and belting: "This is what I'm talking about, here's your treasure. This is what you've been missing."
