MILSTEIN BALSAM Beethoven “Spring” Sonata No. 5 / 10” LP RCA LM 134

 

Milstein exhibits, on this disc, as one critic put it, a “cleanliness of articulation . . .[with] spontaneity and lightness. . . . the last movement is literally as breezy as a spring morning.” It is a superb performance. And exceptionally rare. My copy is not without flaws--there are random soft clicks in mvt. 1, and mvt. 2 has a patch of 6 revolutions of scratching (side 1 of the disc)--and so that side can get no rating higher than VG/VG+, but mvts. 3 & 4 (side 2 of the disc) are delightfully free of overt flaws. And--the disc overall is clean and remarkably free of constant surface noise. This LP rarely shows up on ebay, and of this day of listing, it does not appear at all--a tribute to the scarcity of people finding copies of this disc in a shape worthy of listing.

 

CONDITION of DISC: VG/VG+ (side 1), VG+/VG++ (side 2: only the occasional random soft clicks)

 

CONDITION of SLEEVE: VG+ (the cover has a very discreet and careful tape mending of the lower right of the cover [see photo]; cover does show some slight surface scuffs)
