“SONATINA No2”
FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO

This auction is about a MIKIS THEODORAKIS rare 7” with an excellent sleeve. It is a HIS MASTER VOICE release (made in Greece) with a cat.num.: 7ERG 15003.
The vinyl is in a NM condition.
The sleeve has a not obtrusive to the eye ringwear.
This was written in Paris in 1958, and with it Theodorakis follows logically the path he started with Sonatina No1, and which he has followed and intends to follow in other works of a like character. The two sources of Greek musical tradition, the folk song and the music of Byzantium, now predominate in influence, all others evidenced in the rest of his works being little more than vestigial.
The first movement of the present work, Adante Cantabile, is dominated by two themes, one religious in character, the other echoing the folksong. The second movement, Allegro Grazioso, is dominated by a folk-tune in D. The third movement is an Andate Con Moto, and the final Allegro con-brio which follows it’s a rhythmical and melodic “remembrance” of Cretan tunes. In his cadenza the composer exploitsthe open notesof the violin in imitation of the Cretan lyra….
