The Record;

The record and labels are stellar, Looks 'Never Played'. Graded (NM-) NEAR-MINT MINUS, with just a minimum of very light 'graying' over the years, probably from storage (and that's it! Really, NO other imperfections found!).... AUDIO SOUND IS AWESOME! !

A jewel! 

The Cover;

The cover remains nice. With no seam splits, no 'real' ring impression (just the premature beginning of 'vinyl impression' and no 'real' spine wear (just a bit of corner 'tip' wear on spine). The seams show just a bit of 'peeling'. The back cover shows some wear and 'peeling' both along 'open edge'. A small 'pin hole' is seen in upper right corner. Graded STRONG VERY GOOD+ (STRONG VG+) with the usual light faded 'tip' corners that accompany a VG+ grading. There are no 'wrinkles'.

Here's the story...

In sonic terms, 'Looks Like Rain' sounds as far from the studio slickness of the "countrypolitan" as rock & roll was from Lawrence Welk. In fact, Newbury's sound held more in common with that of Tim Buckley's or Simon & Garfunkel's. But even here, comparisons fail miserably. Aided by co-producers Bob Beckham and guitarist Jerry Kennedy, Newbury created an album so haunting, so elegant, so full of melancholy and mystery, it sounds out of time, out of space. It is a sound that seemingly comes from inside the mind of the listener than from the speakers on the stereo. When the sound of thunder and rain appears at the beginning of "She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye," you are hardly surprised. Newbury's stories are movies; all the settings are in place before the story begins. He can move back and forth in time while changing images to suit the evolving narrative."San Francisco Mable Joy" is a long tale of dispossession, dislocation, failure, and death, but so poetically beautiful it can't help but be heard, then echoed, deep in the heart of the listener. The thunderstorm is in full flood now, running through each track, from speaker to speaker in one long line, sheets of rain pouring down around the place the singer emotes from. Suddenly a gunshot cuts just loudly enough to jar us from the reverie. At six-minutes-and-forty-three seconds, there is plenty of room for the song's drama to create a tension so mournful it becomes nearly unbearable. And even though you know what's coming as the story winds down, the song's ending is totally devastating. 'Looks Like Rain' is so fine, so mysterious in its pace, dimension, quark strangeness and charm, it defies any attempt at strict categorization or criticism; a rare work of genius. ~ Courtesy ALLMUSIC

"San Francisco Mabel Joy"

is a song written by Mickey Newbury, and is one of Newbury's most notable songs, an opinion shared by the artist himself. The song first appeared on Newbury's 1969 concept album Looks Like Rain, a milestone album in the burgeoning songwriter movement in Nashville at the end of the 1960s/beginning of the 1970s. Newbury's original '69 version is a slow folk song which relates the moving saga of a Georgia farm boy's experiences in LA. The song plays an important role in Newbury's legacy, it served as the title for his 1971 concept album Frisco Mabel Joy, though it was not initially included on the album, a new version was featured on 1973's Heaven Help The Child and 1988's In a New Age, a live version was included on 1973's Live At Montezuma Hall and Live in England. Twenty one artists have recorded versions of "San Francisco Mabel Joy." Joan Baez included the song on her 1971 double album Blessed Are..., Waylon Jennings recorded the song on his 1973 breakthrough Lonesome, On'ry and Mean, and Kenny Rogers' version was featured on his 1978 smash The Gambler. Other artists who've recorded "San  Francisco Mabel Joy" include John Denver, David Allan Coe and Kacey Jones. According to Newbury, the song was selected in 2000 as one of the top 100 folk songs of the past one hundred years.
