GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie vengono controllati sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i 33 giri in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1. Per EP e singoli a 45 giri utilizzo un Thorens TD 166 BC con testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All LPs in auction have been fully heard on a Rega Planar 3 turntable with a Grado Statement 1 moving magnet cartridge. I listen EPs and singles 45 rpm. on a Thorens TD 166 BC turntable with a Goldring 1006 MM cartridge. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Note : è ben lecito domandarsi perchè una grande major come la Warner Bros non avesse pubblicato la colonna sonora di un film che oltre al grande successo commerciale aveva ricevuto un Oscar e un Golden Globe per la miglior attrice protagonista, Jane Fonda, ed altri importanti riconoscimenti. La musica è indiscutibilmente bellissima e allora perchè ? E' difficile, almeno per me, dare una corretta spiegazione, forse problemi di diritti con il compositore, forse la presenza di molti importanti musicisti che al momento erano sotto contratto presso altre case discografiche sebbene non fossero accreditati nei titoli del film. Parlo, ad esempio, di personaggi come il trombettista Conte Candoli, il chitarrista Louie Shelton, il sassofonista e flautista Bud Shank, il percussionista Victor Feldman, il tastierista Larry Muhoberac e via dicendo. Chissà ? Così soltanto nel 1977 fu pubblicato per la prima volta il long playing, si dice edito dalla stessa Warner ma in versione non ufficiale senza logo, crediti e titoli dei brani. Dovremo poi attendere l'inizio del nuovo secolo per l'uscita in cd stampata da due diverse etichette.

I brani comunque sono 18 e i loro titoli sono facilmente reperibili sul web ma io non ho voluto appositamente citarli perchè quanto scrivo si vuole concentrare solo al 1977.  Dopo questa premessa, individuerei i tre filoni musicali su cui è basata la colonna sonora: Psichedelia, Funk Rock e Temi Jazz & d'atmosfera. Il lato psichedelico è quello maggiormente presente e, a mio modesto avviso, il più interessante. Si tratta di una psichedelia molto raffinata dalle atmosfere quasi eteree, impalpabili ma al tempo stesso ben percettibili all'ascoltatore. Il primo lato parte dai suoni insistenti di un carillon o qualcosa che lo imita con in sottofondo alcuni tenui ma sensuali vocalizzi femminili e dove a più riprese subentrano particolari effetti sonori talvolta dirompenti mentre il carillon e i vocalizzi riprendono la loro corsa. Altre tracce con caratteristiche fortemente psichedeliche possiedono questa tipologia d'atmosfere rarefatte come sopra ho descritto: al posto del carillon abbiamo il pianoforte con altri effetti sonori (b1), vocalizzi femminili e suoni elettronici violenti (b5) ed ancora il carillon affiancato ad effetti che simulano i rumori del vento fino ad un violento fragore che spacca la sua ripetitiva litania frammentando in molti rivoli le sue sonorità come fossero schegge impazzite. Esce da questo schema di psichedelia eterea la quinta traccia del primo lato in cui dopo un breve esordio del sitar, un flauto indiano o qualcosa di simile, accompagnato da eccellenti percussioni crea un'atmosfera esotica intensissima ed eccitante e con una cantilena misticheggiante nella seconda parte riflette stati d'allucinazione.

Funk Rock: chitarra elettrica spesso dai suoni sporchi, distorti e con effetti wah-wah energicamente accompagnata dal basso, da ottimi fraseggi della batteria e strumenti a fiato (b2) o nell'elettrizzante versione vocale di una non menzionata cantante dalla voce grintosa e roca dopo una lunga introduzione strumentale di chitarra, basso e batteria (a8). Pure in bella fusione con la psichedelia coinvolgendo il piano (b7).

Temi Jazz e d'atmosfera. Fra i primi il bel blues eseguito dalla tromba con il basso in sottofondo (a2) o il magnifico assolo dai profumi jazz del pianoforte (a6). Per gli altri temi ricordo volentieri le fatate sonorità del violino (Harry Bluestone anche se non accreditato) e del pianoforte (a3). Infine il sassofono romantico accompagnato dal piano nelle ultime tracce di entrambi i lati.  

Notes : well it is legitimate to wonder why a major company like Warner Bros. had not released the soundtrack of a film that in addition to the commercial success had received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for best actress, Jane Fonda, and other important awards. The music is undeniably beautiful, then why? It's difficult, at least for me, to give a correct explanation, maybe royalty questions with the composer, perhaps the presence of many important musicians at the time who were under contract to other record companies although  uncredited in the film titles. I'm talking about, for example, of people like trumpeter Conte Candoli, guitarist Louie Shelton, saxophonist and flutist Bud Shank, percussionist Victor Feldman, keyboardist Larry Muhoberac and so on. Who knows ? So only in 1977 the LP appeared for the first time, it says released by the samee Warner but as unofficial version without logo, credits and track titles. At the beginning of the new century this score will be released on CD for two different labels. The tracks, however, are 18 and their titles are readily available on the web but I did not want to mention them specifically because what I write it has to relate to the year 1977. After this introduction, I would locate the three music currents on which is based the score: Psychedelia, Funk Rock, Jazz & atmospheric themes. The psychedelic aspect is the one more present and, in my humble opinion, even more interesting. It is a highly refined psichedelia from the atmosphere almost ethereal, impalpable but at the same time very perceptible to the listener. The first side begins with the insistent sound of a music box or something that does the same with some pale but sensual female vocalizations in the background with the involvement on several occasions of special sound effects in certain cases shattering while the music box and the vocalizations resume their running. Other tracks with strong psychedelic characteristics feature this type of rarefied atmospheres as I described above: in place of the music box we have the piano with other sound effects (b1), female vocalisms and violent electronic sounds (b5) and again the music box joined to effects simulating wind noise up to a violent clang that splits its repetitive litany fragmenting its sonority in many streams as loose cannons. It comes out of this pattern of ethereal psychedelia the fifth track of the first side where after a short opening of the sitar, an Indian flute or something similar accompanied by excellent percussions creates a fascinating exotic atmosphere and with a mystical chant during the second half reflects states of hallucination.

Funk Rock characterized by electric guitar often from the fuzzy sound, also with distortions and wah-wah effects powerfully accompanied by bass, very good drumming and wind instruments (b2), or the killer vocal version of an unnamed female singer from gritty and hoarse voice after an exciting long instrumental introduction of guitar, bass and drums (a8). Even in beautiful fusion with psychedelia involving piano (b7). Jazz & atmospheric themes. Among the first ones the lovely blues performed by trumpet with bass in the background (a2) or a magnificent jazzy piano solo (a6). In regards of the other themes I gladly recall the bewitched sound of the violin (Harry Bluestone although uncredited) and piano (a3). Finally the romantic sax accompanied by piano in the last tracks of both sides.
