Description

Super rare Bernie Grundman test pressing acetate disc of Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana single, taken from the 1987 Bad album, but the single was released in early 1988. This mastering was done on February 12, 1988 by Grundman, who also mastered the Bad album and the singles from it, as well as Thriller a few years earlier. Only a handful of these acetates were made, one for Michael himself, one for producer Quincy Jones, and just a few more for various people involved. This one was made for Larry Stessel, who was the head of marketing for Epic Records, the person responsible for most of MJ’s record promotion, also starting with Thriller a couple of years earlier. These discs were made one by one with hand-typed labels and hand-written covers and given to whoever was present and needed a reference recording for whatever reason. The disc was made to be a 7” single, but it is etched on to a 10” disc, and is in a 12” sleeve.

The only other copy of this acetate to have come up for sale that I can find is one that was made for MJ’s manager Frank DiLeo, sold at the 'Thrilling' Life of the 'King of Pop' Auction, Part of an Entertainment Memorabilia Auction, Los Angeles - 18 Dec 2009. It went for considerably more than I am asking. No other copies have ever been sold as far as I can tell.

The disc has some scuffs and light marks but it is actually not bad at all. Looks somewhat scratchy but if you look closely you see it is all superficial scuffing. No deep marks at all. I am calling it VG because it looks a little marked up but it really is better than that. More like VG+ but it plays NM. It is of course playable and actually plays perfectly with no noise at all. Not any pops or ticks or even light crackle. The cover is somewhat worn, with a few light stains and lots of evidence of being handled. Rough corners and some light creasing in spots as well, but actually nicely intact and quite striking. Not too bad. Not perfect but it plays perfectly and is SO rare. Only maybe 5 or 6 of these were made, if that. A perfect copy would be twice this price, if one ever came up for sale (unlikely), so this is a bargain! You will never see another.
