MGM - Early Sound Film Records - West Coast Tests - Voice and Talent Tests 2 Discs - both are 12-inch one-sided synchronized sound discs - Pressed by Columbia Play at 33-1/3 rpm with 78rpm needle Start at inside groove, plays outward like Vitaphone synchronous discs (arrow points to start position) Information also engraved into shellac, in the area between the grooves and the labels. Test #148 - Two Tests - each disc content is different. "Harold Conkling" Scene 1 ... Labels say "Master Selection" Take 1 disc (first test) 320 feet (of film) - Take 2 disc (second test) 365 feet (of film) Both Dated March 6, 1929
On both, the artist introduces himself, stating he was with the Shubert stage production of "My Maryland" (1927 - 1928) On the first test, he plays a dramatic scene from "The Vagabond King", then sings a robust song from "Vagabond King" On the second test, he does a boy-girl scene from another play, then sings a song called "The Last Hour"
From the period when Hollywood was raiding Broadway for talent in early sound film "Talkies" Interesting Film History records from the early days of sound film technology . . . * I looked at early Theatre programs for "My Maryland" for New York's Shubert Casino Theatre and a Shubert Chicago run from the period and Mr. Conkling is listed among principals in the cast. He is sometimes billed as Hal Conkling. I think he took over the part originally played by Henry Hull in the opening night program. *
Both E- to E Condition ... heavy laminated shellac discs, play well.
