Description
Pre-ordered in December 1980 from Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. I honestly believe this to be one of the best pressings ever made for this album. In addition, I would say the VERY first Japanese pressing (SJET-7980) and the very first Monarch pressings (EKS-74007, [MON] in deadwax) are the other 2 worth getting. The only problem is that it is nearly impossible to find them in decent condition. They are usually found with scratches, strange stains, marks, and what audiophiles dread the most.....unacceptable surface noise.
It must be remembered that The Doors first album was recorded almost "live" with very few overdubs and on a 4-track machine. It was a straightforward and beautiful all analog process that without the talents of Producer Paul Rothchild and Engineer Bruce Botnick, wouldn't have succeeded. That said, I feel the MFSL pressing closely matches the first Monarch pressing but in my opinion, betters it. Not just because the quality of the vinyl is superior; but because there is an improved separation between the instruments. The sound is cleaner, well balanced, and distortion-free. To my ears, the keyboards in particular sound clearer with better definition......especially in the songs, "Break On Through" and "Take It As It Comes".
I am offering this pristine, unopened, sealed and stickered MFSL audiophile copy from my personal collection. I imagine it is among the first ones that were sent out to individuals and stores in the winter of 1981.
