MEHER BABA – Happy Birthday ORIG Universal Spiritual League LP / (UK, Stereo?, 1970)
Happy to present the first Meher Baba LP, privately pressed by the Universal Spiritual League of Ecclestone Square, London S.W.1 and featuring 1 composition from Ronnie Lane, 1 from Ron Geesin and 5 Pete Townshend songs as well as his version of ‘Begin The Beguine’ by Cole Porter. Effectively, this is not far from a Pete solo LP and supposedly was limited to a private (mail order?) release of 100 back in 1970. It has the booklet but does not have the ‘Happy Birthday’ lyric sheet.
THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1970 PRESSING with the blank white labels and not the later ‘MBO 1’ 70s issue which had printed labels, a different sleeve and no booklet/inserts.
The flimsy non-laminated gatefold sleeve is in G+ (Good Plus) condition. It has 3 thin flipbacks to the rear. There is a sticker pull to the top right which has been touched in with black marker. The chunky booklet was originally stapled in the middle of the gate but has come loose and is now separate. There is a ½ inch split to the top edge and the thin spine shows rubbing. Not much creasing to front or back but some general grubbiness/handling signs. No tape, writing or stickers.
The blank white labels have the numbers 1 & 2 written on the respective sides. Slight dirt and rubbing. Not much spindle evidence.
The thick, 28-page LP-sized book is in close to EX condition with no writing or tears but some handling creases and general age toning. It has illustrations from Mike McInnerney and poems and articles from various underground shakers from the time.
The medium-weight vinyl has been enjoyed but not abused. It shows several light scuff lines, hairlines and small nicks. Side 2 has a couple of larger more prominent scuffs but these are all surface only and in general are not ugly or intrusive. Overall the vinyl grades a visual VG (Very Good). IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and Side 1 plays really well with little to fault other than some light dust static. This is a little more prominent on Side 2 which is the quieter of the two. There’s also around 6 loudish pops during ‘Begin The Beguine’. Add some occasional light ticks and that’s about it. Remember I try to outline all audio issues away from perfect playback. This LP still sounds great for the majority – play grade is somewhere around VG+.
Very rare disc with Peter Townshend contributions.
No reserve.

PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME TO UNDERSTAND MY GRADES!
I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
