Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt, very faintly textured surfaces, this seen more under angled light.

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with just one tiny spindle trace on side one and none on side two. A remarkable rare record in stunning condition.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Very scarce: this as a first UK pressing on the Plum label. In such amazing, barely played condition rarer still. MC5 were not big sellers here and were largely ignored initially. This a relatively late Plum pressing as well, most seen are reissues on the Kinney Atlantic format with a new label design and catalogue number. Many now regard their albums classics, but like so many, they were largely dismissed at the time.

Brief Info: The first studio album by this pioneering American protopunk band, the music less thrashy than the live debut ‘Kick Out the Jams’, now being a more straightforward hard rock album, with a few quieter songs. Audiences at the time were dismissive and this sold even fewer copies than ‘Jams’, but time has reassessed this album with opinion now far more favourable for the new more straight rock sound. Most of the songs are self-written, but open and end with rock n roll standards, the final one being the title song written by Chuck Berry. A highly elusive album as a UK first-press original, this one a beauty that appears hardly even played and offering terrific clean sound. The cover largely the same and this being fully laminated. For many, this revolutionary hard-hitting band a major part of the punk rock movement, and only later were their albums more fully appreciated. But by then, all the originals were gone and finding them incredibly hard. Indeed, this is my first ever original copy of this album – I am unlikely to find or hear a better one – for collectors, this is strongly recommended and a rare opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being somewhat conservative I feel. A single fully laminated format, printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the original date-coded Polydor inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a rich shine, freshness and clarity with only mild rim dulling seen under light, this mostly on the highly revealing black back. As can be seen, the front has a ‘BUDGET RECORDS’ £1.75 price sticker near the top right corner – being a decimal sticker, it could mean it was purchased from a second-hand shop from the distant past – but it equally possible (and possibly more likely), this was a remainder from the shop as this failed to sell well. Sometimes records like this were left considerable times in racks unsold and discounted. Indeed I clearly remember a copy of Zappa’s ‘Freak Out’ in a shop rack from 1974 as a single album original. Clearly that had been there a long time. When I see stickers on covers I have bought in, I tend to leave them alone, just in case, there does appear some light ‘activity’ around it’s edge and appears old and a little aged. There is a little mainly fine laminate lifting to the spine edges both sides, but few creases away from the edges, any present are very fine and faint. The white on the cover front has aged little and looks very impressive. A somewhat iconic and classic cover that will prove hard to find better – UK examples having a more de luxe look with the laminated surfaces.

Top Edge: Near perfect with just one tiny tone spot. Very straight, thin and unbowed with a super-smooth laminated surface.

Bottom Edge: A small few tiny laminate surface chips, those apart, as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression patchy and light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate, just one very fine hairline crease/crack.

Corners: All retain very fine and mostly excellent or better shape. Minimal traces of any wear and no dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly elusive UK early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and with only minimal hints of age. When Polydor inner sleeves this great age – and no doubting the authenticity of this one, as it has the 1/0670 date code – which means an early June 1970 date, this seen in close up – they also carry beauty. Most seen are worn, torn and badly darkened with age, this is superb. My opinion of a clean inner means a likely clean record seldom carried more weight. Barely creased with two immaculate window circles and the lining fresh and crystal clear. All edges unsplit with no repairs, they hardly get better than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better and as close to my full Mint(–) grading as they get. A superb visual copy that is very clean with very fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a gorgeous relatively late Plum label record that should please most-all collectors. Indeed this could prove a significant upgrade for many lucky enough to own one.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This some ‘lost’ original protopunk album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are bordering on minuscule and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. The lack of discolouration to the cover, even with laminate protection, they usual do, a great indicator (as well as the clean inner sleeve). Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record that will seldom be seen or offered, especially this clean. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
