Hi Records produced some of the finest soul singers in the history of the genre. Under the stewardship of the great bandleader and music executive, Willie Mitchell, these artists came into their own and found their unique voice. Two fine examples of this are singers Ann Peebles and O.V. Wright.

Ann Peebles was just shy of twenty-one when she was picked up by Willie. She had that ‘thing’ and had been nurtured by her mother (who was a singer) and father (who placed her in his church choir and family band). Ann was teamed up with songwriter Don Bryant, who helped pen some of her greatest hits (“I Can’t Stand the Rain”, “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home,” and “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down”) and ended up marrying her. Her songs have been covered and sampled by several artists including Bette Midler and Missy Elliot. John Lennon famously stated that “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was one of his favorite songs.

O.V. Wright was one of the most underrated soul singers of the ’60s and ’70s. Like many of his contemporaries, he started in gospel music, touring with Sunset Travelers in the early ’60s. In 1964, he made the switch to secular music with his powerful ballad “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” While with Backbeat, he recorded some of the best southern soul of the decade including “Born All Over,” “Ace of Spades,” and “Don’t Let My Baby Ride.” When he eventually joined Hi Records he found success with such classics as “I’d Rather Be (Blind, Crippled & Crazy)” and “Into Something (Can’t Shake Loose).”

Fat Possum is the highly regarded, Mississippi-based record label that got its start in the early 1990s. The company began by specializing in recording undiscovered blues artists from the area.
