Ultra Mega Rare MAYDAY PHEERCE CITI  PC001……

I would just like to clarify that both versions of this record were mispressed, but this version is regarded as not the mispress for some reason. This is the Ultra Rare 1st of 3     releases on Kevin Saunderson’s short lived Pheerce Citi Label released on 13th May 1988. It actually plays at 33rpm & not 45 as indicated.

Tracklisting as stated on the label reads;

A1; Sinister / 1ST Mix (Mayday)

This is a completely different mix that hasn’t been released else where .

A2; Sinister / Undisputed Mix (Mayday)

This is actually Wiggin’ (Original Mix)- (Mayday)

B2; Wiggin’/ Master Reese Mix (MAYDAY)

This is correct..

B2; Freestyle / Bongo Mix (Mayday)

This is correct…

The more common mispress has the B Side duplicated & has the Sheridan Chicago address on where as this hasn’t.

It is pressed on Dark Blue / Purple translucent vinyl (seen in the 2nd picture) like a few records that were pressed around that time. Run out Groove reads; (PC-001-A CX 1957 A) &

(PC-001-B CX 1957 B) & isn’t a Sunshine NYC pressing like the other version.

Below is an interview with Derrick May in September 1997 about the record:

MAYDAY – SINISTER (PHEERCE CITI)

“Aargh! Nightmare! Kevin didn’t know what the f*u@k he was doing back in those days. Pheerce citi was Kevin’s Label. But he didn’t know how to run a record label; he could tie his shoes better than run a record label back then. He is my friend and I love him. But because of Kevin not paying attention, this record has the same songs on both sides. As you can see on the label there were two mixes of Sinister on the other side. Nobody has heard those mixes! They made a mistake and mastered the same two songs on the goddamn thing! So this was a funny 12 – inch. But it was Wiggin’ that turned out to be the big song. I always thought that Sinister was more important, but nobody ever heard it.

Back in those days we were making music in my house or Kevin’s house, on a little eight - track recorder. We would make records in a day. We would arrive in Kevin’s house at 10 o’clock at night, eat euh… truly, truly, this is the truth, Domino’s Pizza at his place. Now Domino’s Pizza comes from Detroit originally. Their headquarters are in Detroit. We grew up on Domino’s; we were the guinea pigs for Domino’s new recipes. So we used to eat Domino’s Pizza and make these f*@king records in the night, do you know what I mean? And this is one of those records.”

Why not package it in a pizza box then?  

“Ha ha ha. We didn’t have any money, man! But you know what? I used to have so much desire to put more records out, but never felt comfortable, putting a lot of records out. I was really uncomfortable with this one. When I saw they had messed it up, I had Kevin pull it. So he pulled it and stopped selling it. I think he only sold about 2,000 copies.”

Well - this is the record with one of the elusive  mixes of Sinister on it. Condition: VG/VG++/ with no skips.

I have put a sensible reserve on this as I have only ever seen another 2 copies which sold  between £280.00 - £350.00.
