ONCE MORE ‘ROUND THE SUN
Art is a cyclical beast. The same can easily be said of Grammy Award nominated hard rock juggernaut Mastodon. The group’s four members recognize the importance of life’s omnipresent cycles on their sixth full-length album, Once More ‘Round the Sun. The band orbits around themes of loss and rebirth, twirling a sonic spiral of its signature robust riffing, hypnotically haunting soundscapes, triage of dynamic voices, and thundering seismic grooves. The very title says something slightly different for each member. "Quite literally, Once More 'Round the Sun means a year-in-the-life," explains drummer Brann Dailor. "Lyrically, we were discussing things that happened to us recently, whereas in the past we looked further back for inspiration. It's about 365 days in this band. It was a tough and strange journey. We happened to be in the middle of completing a full rotation musically as everything else was going on."
CRACK THE SKYE
Mastodon further develops its heavy sound on the groundbreaking Crack the Skye to include prog-rock, blues, country, and harmonic singing. Again featuring the peerless interplay of virtuosic guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher, the band's fourth studio set mines subject matter ranging from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body experiences and Stephen Hawking theories on wormholes. The psychedelic concept album is inspired by Hinds' near-death experience as well as childhood suicide of drummer Brann Dailor's sister, making this the most personal, spiritual, and realized effort of Mastodon's career. As well as the quartet's most ambitious.
BLOOD MOUNTAIN
The sludgy, raw and fierce Mastodon blurs the line between metal, rock and prog with their major-label debut, Blood Mountain. After two acclaimed indie albums and tours with Slayer, Iron Maiden and Rob Zombie and dates at Ozzfest, Mastodon storms onto the national stage ready to annihilate everything that has come before. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. Lyrically and vocally, there are stand-outs--especially "Colony of Birchmen" with rich harmonies and a guest appearance from QOTSA's Josh Homme. Other guests on the record include Scott Kelly of Neurosis and Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta.
