Label/Format: Tamla Motown with intense matt black surfaces with a very gentle trace of texturing. Side one has the early embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both letters so perfect they hardly even show to the naked eye, but can be clearly seen on my high resolution photograph.

Label Conditions: Both in amazing conditions: both practically as-made, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any hint of spindle marks or even traces, formats as seen. Crucially for records of this mode and vintage, this one is hardly even played, it comes from the same collection as the first two Oriole Wells albums I am also offering. The owner put these direct to a reel-to-reel tape recorder and left the albums in storage thereafter. The only issue on this record is patchy, reasonably light dulling, often referred to as ‘bag rash’, as the inner sleeve has tracing paper lining, this was a surprise. But if a record is stored for decades without being disturbed or removed, they can still get this issue – which quickly to add – is TOTALLY harmless. This vintage album plays perfectly with nothing to fault. The ‘sweat’ marks are only light, but visible more under light and only a superficial issue that may concern the most discerning visual purists. The main fact is, like the Oriole pair, the record has barely any usage or friction marks, and not a stylus scratch to be seen. One to play and enjoy, and for any record this vast age to be so hardly used is a rare thing indeed, this for one of her most popular albums.

Rarity: A scarce record, in this condition even more so. It takes little imagination to realise the condition this record could be seen in these days. Such records were likely to have been subjected to the harshest of treatment on the most basic and heavy tracking mono record players of the time – but this one appears hardly used with the only issue for the visual purists, the light streaky surface dulling seen under light – the record plays beautifully throughout. A vintage early album within the soul genre on the early Tamla Motown label.

Original Year of Release: 1965 in the UK with this title. Issued in 1964 in the United States as ‘Mary Wells Sings My Guy’, and includes the same track listing, but a different cover.

Brief Info: The fifth Mary Wells album issued in the UK in 1965 at the height of her popularity. A legendary singer that helped put soul and the Motown label on the music map, this was her first on the famous label in the UK. A groundbreaking singer that helped to define the sound of Motown in the early 1960s. Along with the Supremes, the Miracles, the Temptations and the Four Tops, Wells was pioneering into getting this style of music on mainstream radio. Also soon to be part of the Northern Soul scene that swept into fashion and the club scene of the decade. She had several hit singles, many composed by the master songwriter Smokey Robinson including her well-known classic ‘My Guy’ that is included on this tremendous album. She became known as ‘The Queen of Motown’ and a huge star for this famous label, she departed in 1964 largely at the height of her popularity. This plays with superb sound, the light surface dulling is fine and patchy, and has NO affect on the fantastic sound at all. The cover front is beautiful with an immaculate portrait of the singer, the back gently aged with some faint patchy toning, but minimal real wear. Historically, one of the most important albums within the soul genre and a copy that does it strong justice, for collectors of this label, brand and artist, this is indispensible.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being ultra critical and cautious for a cover of this immense age, this is a very fine example with only a little gentle patchy toning on the unprotected back. A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folds and ends on three external flipbacks. The main panel is matt with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the original company tracing paper style lined inner sleeve, later ones would have had an EMI promotional graphic inner, this copy is very early indeed as the mother and stamper codes above reitterate.

Lamination & Front: A very small light rub on the bottom right corner and tiny tip darkening. This apart, I could easily grade this gorgeous front with a couple of pluses, this looks very impressive. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with barely any hint of dulling, even viewed under light and no lifting whatsoever. Any of the few creases are fine and light near the edges, there are hardly any at all, the main area devoid of any, even half moons. The graphic looks hugely impressive with nothing to fault, deep fresh colour retained, there is no fading at all. This elusive classic Motown cover front will prove immensely difficult to match, let alone find better.

Cover Back: This unprotected side has aged a little with a moderate tone line on the left opening edge. Also patchy, much fainter traces here-and-there, so this side does give polite and gentle clues of its considerably vintage. Minimal traces of rubbing and no ring wear, the only creases (three) on the left of the bottom flipback laminate, and the same corner tip. All three flipbacks are in very fine solid condition. No lifting or damage, naturally darkened, but only quite gently. All their end edges with no burring or grubbiness, but a little tones on the exposed ends where the laminate ends, that seldom avoided at best.

Top Edge: Tiny wear to the very tip ends, but still quite straight with just a little minor, natural bowing that is seldom avoided totally. The main surface is unworn, still fully laminated, smooth and unchipped.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above and even straighter, very impressive.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mild discolour to the card end seen viewed end-on, totally natural and proving 100 per cent, this is untrimmed or enhanced. Still sharp with minimal hint of wear or thickening. Record enters on this edge which is unsoftened or feathered, more unusual for covers this age, also emphasising how little the record has been entered or removed.

Spine and Text: Again very impressive: solid mainly very straight with minimal hint of compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled and barely cracked laminate – one fine hairline crease only, any toning faint and light, most near the very corner ends.

Corners: Tiny discolouration to some tips with a small rub to the bottom right front and a gentle small crease, in terms of real wear or damage, that’s about it, which should speak volumes for the rest. So any dinking gentle and light. Very fine, and mostly excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: An impressive all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find better. With such little real wear and gorgeous front, only gently aged on the back, it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a white inner with the vintage tracing paper style lining. It has minimal creasing and any crinkle little and light. Lightly aged with the paper moderately darkened. Two pristine, crisp window circles with the lining fully intact, neat and attractive. No edge splits, all sound and solid with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Always more difficult to grade a record with some dulling to the surfaces, this usually caused by many years of not removing from the inner sleeve. In terms of usage marks (in this case lack of), I am happy to grade this record as EXCELLENT(+) – but with quite light, streaky, patchy dulling. This nothing to do with wear, simply a trait of non-usage. All collectors will have seen this, and unless severe, it has no affect on sound, and that very much the case here. Still a fine visual copy that in real terms is clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. Barely any friction or handling marks, certainly no stylus scratches, this record plays beautifully. Not for the visual purist, but if audio quality is the priority, this delivers.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early UK Motown classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. A mono record not really designed to be played on revealing higher-end stereo equipment, but when found like this, it offers the most wonderful warm, detailed and punchy sound. Well’s vocals are fantastic, fully focused, precise and sharp, few very early copies will match or outperform this I feel sure. Her famous Smokey Robinson written classic ‘My Guy’ will always sound better on the genuine album rather than compilations or reissues. Both channels are clean and sharp, hardly played and stored with care and handling. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the first copy I have ever had. It will prove difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation. Wells one of the pioneering greats on this famous label, even those not particularly into this music genre can fully appreciate this wonderful early class act – myself very much included.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
