Description
MARY LOU WILLIAMS Black Christ of the Andes VINYL LP RARE on MPS CRM 611 Gatefold German Pressing Reissue of the SABA Album recorded originally in 1963 THIS IS MARVELLOUS Spiritual JAZZ of the finest order - MARY LOU WILLIAMS combines spirituals, blues, and jazz into a forward-thinking suite that somehow manages to pull together Christian spirituality and African-American music. BLACK CHRIST OF THE ANDES is a bit Special - with passages of vocal choral pieces, and sophisticated interpretations of standard tunes (including a smoking "It Ain't Necessarily So) alternate with Williams's originals. The fractured, avant-classical "A Fungus A Mungus," for example, gives way to the upbeat "Koolbonga," before closing out with "Praise the Lord." The artist's piano skills are on full display here, too; her solos show her roots as a stride pianist, but incorporating post-bop and modal playing. For its musical range and breadth of vision, BLACK CHRIST OF THE ANDES is stunning The Musicians are Mary Lou Williams - Piano; Grant Green - Guitar; Budd Johnson - Bass Clarinet & Tenor Sax; Ben Tucker/Percy Heath/ Larry Gales/Theodore Crommwell - Bass; Percy Brice/Tim Kennedy/George Chamble - Drums; The Howard Roberts Choral Group - Vocals and the Track listing : Black Christ Of The Andes; It Ain't Necessarily So; The Devil; Miss D.D.; Anima Christi; A Grand Nite For Swinging; My Blue Heaven; A Fungus Amungus; Praise the Lord Christi; A Grand Nite For Swinging; My Blue Heaven; A Fungus Amungus; Praise the Lord VINYL is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and Similarly the Sleeve.
