MARTHA VELEZ - Fiends & Angels ORIG London/Sire LP HAK 8395 (UK, Mono, 1969)

Happy to present probably the rarest UK edition of this, Martha’s quintessential LP, with a cast iron Premier League roll call of supporting musicians including Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, Brian Augur, Paul Kossoff, Christine McVie, Stan Webb, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Wynder K. Frog to name a few. This supporting cast is uncredited on this original 1st London release. The LP was produced by Mike Vernon and he re-released it on his own Blue Horizon label, by which time it seems he had acquired the rights to name the musicians involved. That is one difference between this and the BH release, the other is that this wasn’t re-released in Mono, making this BY FAR THE HARDEST PRESS OF THIS LEGENDARY LP TO FIND. By 1969, Mono was virtually discontinued - stereos of this LP are far more common and this press is, I believe, the only way to hear this magnificent collection in Mono! Not only is it very rare, but I can bring it to you in BRILLIANT, BARELY PLAYED condition with the audio sounding as good as you could possibly hope for.

The single format, front laminated non-flipback sleeve is the correct ‘69 vintage with mono/stereo peephole and was printed in England by S.P. Ltd. The spine is in great nick and has the ‘pinched’ ends (top & bottom) - all wording fully legible, just one tiny laminate crack. Laminated front panel is excellent with just one crescent crease and a longer corner crease to the top right (not easily visible through the artwork). Other than that looks fresh with only slight ring impression top and bottom. Edges and corners are all fine, infact very little corner softening at all! Ultra light buffing to the top edge. Opening edges near to full definition with virtually no softening. Non-laminated rear panel maintains maximum colour. Very light rubbing top and bottom, and a patch of slight (not heavy) rippling only to the bottom left quarter, also a very small tear repair to the right top edge. All in all a very pleasing example that grades EX- (Excellent Minus), if not full EX.

The BLACK mono London labels are in more than Excellent condition. One tiny spindle trace to one side, maybe 2 to the other. NO writing, foxing spots, no stickers or residue. A lovely vintage pair!

The sharp, medium weight vinyl must rank as one of the very best Monos left out there (I won’t claim for it to be THE best, because seriously, how can you ever know?), but this one sure is special and must be up there. Except for one ultra faint and hardly recognisable scuff to the first track on Side 2, this disc IS COMPLETELY WITHOUT BLEMISH and lies proudly flat with close to day-of-purchase good looks. That means NO scratches, hairlines, dust pockets, craters or bubbles. Has been thoroughly listened to and offers a lovely rich mono listening experience without issue or hindrance. That means NO clicks, pops, hiss, crackle, distortion or loss of clarity. Plays as you would expect for such a seldom touched disc, near silence between tracks and infact very little surface noise or static at all. The one faint scuff means I’m giving it an EX+ (Excellent Plus) instead of M-. Beautiful!!

Supplied in its original red border mono poly-lined inner. Very rare original Mono. Rock’s royalty featured within these grooves! No reserve!
