Fully RE-Mastered for Vinyl Between the Spring of 1971 and the fall of 1974 Marc Bolan and T.Rex completed no less than four coast to coast American tours. Bolan’s obsessive desire to break into the lucrative American marketplace, in the same way he had successfully negotiated Britain, Europe and Japan, was seen by many as his ultimate undoing. Yet Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex gave everything, and then a little bit more during those exhausting and exhilarating American tours.
This album is made up of three separate T.Rex performances. The first two which comprise side one of this album, come from Los Angeles, California during the long hot summer months of 1973. The third session which makes up the second side, features the first ever live performance by the classic T.Rex line up of Marc Bolan, Mickey Finn, Steve Currie and Bill Legend. Recorded at WBAI Studios, New York on 8th April 1971 (the day prior to the band kicking off their first American tour in Detroit, Michigan). This incredible session features stunning extended performances of Elemental Child and Jewel. Both featuring Marc Bolan in full guitar hero mode. It would be fair to say that American radio was never too sure what to do with Marc Bolan. In the States he had always been associated with the counter culture and the London Underground music scene, through his involvement with both John’s Children and Tyrannosaurus Rex. Therefore any exposure he managed to muster had been through FM stations, which were far more album orientated in their approach. Bolan himself seemed very much at ease with this and was quoted at the time as saying ;
‘We don’t mean that much on AM you see, which is very weird. Top forty in America just don’t seem to play any English groups at all just now. Where as FM play us all the time, which is much more of a head sort of audience. It’s very strange. Yet singles are very important They give a three minute shot that brings people up, something that they can really listen too. That’s what I think people like Hendrix, The Beatles and The Who did. It was very important they had singles out. It made it worthwhile to listen to the radio. America’s very different from England as It’s a much bigger country. I don’t think you can be really enormous and artistically successful without singles’.
In America over the coming two years Bolan’s growth, both artistically and as a performing artist seemed to be a far more measured affair than the madness that was ensuing back in Britain and throughout Europe. Where Bolan was rapidly becoming the first bona fide superstar of the 1970’s.
However his success in America was not inconsiderable. He went from not having a hit record at the time of that first WBAI session and playing primarily as a support act (as he did on that initial tour). Too having a massive hit single with Bang A Gong (Get It On), two critically acclaimed gold selling albums in Electric Warrior and The Slider. As well as a string of sell out live performances, including such prestigious venues as the Hollywood Palladium and Carnegie Hall. The recordings used to make up side one of this album are taken from shows at the Aquarius Theatre and NBC Studios, Los Angeles, California (April and September 1973 respectively). The original classic four piece T.Rex line-up are now augmented by second guitarist Jack Green and female backing vocal sensations Gloria Jones, Sister Pat Hall and Stephanie Spruill. This gave the live sound a breathtaking kick. With Bolan often referring to the music produced by this expanded version of T.Rex as ‘Cosmic Rock’. He continued to develop the live sound throughout the remainder of 1973 and by the time T.Rex toured the UK again the following January, he had two new drummers and the amazing Howie Casey on sax. . .
