Brief Artist & Album Info: After 1960s pop and psychedelia, and then a brief excursion into jazz-rock on Vertigo, Manfred Mann formed his Earth Band that now played progressive rock and this album is his true classic. A brilliant album based on the planets, this has always been my personal favourite within his catalogue – but he did a host of gems with this band. From the very opening seconds of the first track the brilliance of the album is apparent: the delicate, haunting choral vocals for Dylan’s classic ‘Father of Day: Father of Night’ fades in before the full band kicks-in hard. No progressive rock lover can fail to enjoy this fabulous album. The Dylan song is totally reworked into a lengthy prog-rock classic. When reviewed in the ‘Record Collector’ monthly in the Island (and related label) reviews, the critic rated this album as his favourite of all time. I can hardly believe myself the age of this album, but yes, it’s over 44 years old. This is a very strong copy, the wear-prone cover has little and the record plays impressively. For me, Manfred Mann clearly more at-home with rock rather than jazz, a strongly recommended set.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that have a gentle hint of texturing. Manufactured and distributed in England by Island Records Ltd.

Cover Front: Any hint of rubbing light with no fading to the vulnerable unprotected surface that has also avoided creasing and sticker issues. Any marks very few and light and little detracts from what is an impressive front.

Cover Back: There is light record impression and mild rim rubbing near the top and bottom, this seldom avoided on this cover. Compared to several I have seen, this is very light, overall a very fine back to complement the impressive front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside as seen, again impressive.

Top Edges: Straight and flush with minimal traces of wear.

Bottom Edges: A little fine and light rubbing, for dark storage edges, both have fared quite well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is tucked and folded with a real edge, this has hardly any rubbing. The inner back entrance edge is sharp with barely any wear, this naturally protected from the outer edge which a fraction wider in manufacture, this one has a little thickening in places as seen viewed end-on. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, just a hint of left tilt being critical. All text present and unworn, most of any rubbing near the ends which is only quite light. Note the text on this original is inverted as also seen. This spine surface is very prone to light fading which this one has totally avoided, which of course is the best news.

Corners: Any tip rubs are mainly small with very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A lovely cover, and in terms of real wear, this has little, this is often seen very badly rubbed and faded, often with heavy full-circle penetrating ring wear which has avoided. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the earliest issued of this album included a typical plain white unlined inner as favoured by EMI who pressed this Island record. Slighter later ones had the graphic type. Hardly creased with no edge splits or repairs, the paper only gently darkened to politely remind of age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Some very quiet passages, none more so than the fragile choral opening to the first side that plays impressively without the usual crackle most seem to have. Faint contact sound from the record briefly at the very beginning which disappears quickly, but perfection on this unforgiving opening is beyond challenging for a vintage vinyl record, that simply being honest. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played quite lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
