Pretty Flamingo marked the end of an era for Manfred Mann, though few American listeners, relatively oblivious to the affairs of this most underrated of all major British Invasion bands, knew it -- Paul Jones was to leave soon after, as would Mike Vickers, a pair of events that would radically alter the group's sound and cause them to be abandoned by their label, EMI. But if it was a swansong for the original band, what a way to go, showing off just how subversive this band's American albums, in particular, were. As was the custom here (as opposed to England), the producers put the group's current pop hit single on the LP as a lure to boost sales, but as with their other releases, the rest of the album is loaded up with hard R&B, soul, and blues, and delivered all of the music that white middle-class parents were scared to death their kids would hear. Jones was one of the best white soul shouters in England -- at his best, he sings like a god -- and in his final body of work for the group he goes out in superb style, appealing to decidedly older-than-teen listeners on the bluesy "Let's Go Get Stoned" and assuming a more ominous cast on "I Put a Spell on You." He then detours into Swinging London on the ebullient group original "It's Getting Late." He also, for a moment, sound uncannily like Sam Cooke on the album's soul version of "Tennessee Waltz." He doesn't let up on the Oscar Brown, Jr. number "Driva Man," and closes on his own bluesy original "Did You Have to Do That." In this company, the title track, a catchy pop hit dominated by Jones' voice, a flute, and a thick acoustic guitar, is almost the least interesting song on the album.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine    (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a minor wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel
