Label/Format: His Master’s Voice – original with Gramophone text and side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes, both of which are immaculate and totally unworn (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light/light, mostly fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Given the era and mode of this popular record, this appears very lightly played and offers very impressive, clean sound.

Cat Number: CLP 1911.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good weight for any record and typical of this period.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: far harder to find in lightly played condition and offering superb mono sound. As I have stated on countless occasions, most of these popular albums from the 1960s were so often played to destruction on heavy tracking, thick, often blunt stylus that ruined the sound.

Brief Info: The second Manfred Mann album and again it sold well peaking at No 7 in the UK charts. Featuring again the brilliant Paul Jones on vocals, the material here was more pop-orientated. It proved to be his last album with the band. They went on to have a host of quality hit singles. I have seen this album a few times, but rarely quite this clean. The cover has little wear, the record with no penetrating scratches, groovewear or distortion caused by thick, heavy tracking mono stylus that were seldom ever changed or maintained. Some modest light surface marks, but when they fail to sound or spoil the music, they bother me little. A real joy to hear this pop classic so clean, this too on a highly revealing Linn LP12 turntable for which this record was not really ever designed. This brings those swinging sixties memories flooding back.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The front is very impressive indeed. The only blemishing of any real note are small rubs or chips to the corners – these are only minor and light – please remember the considerable age of this vintage cover. Laminate seldom remains this clear, clean and fresh looking after all this time. Even under light, only very mild and light traces of any friction rubs or dulling – any present is around the thick record’s rim shape, but it’s almost as light as it gets. Very few marks and barely any creasing at all, and all the laminate is fully adhered. They seldom get seen a great deal better than this.

Cover Back: Minimal traces of any ageing, grubbiness or wear, a small and mild impression near the bottom edge central, but little else. The lack of rubbing and ringwear is always welcome news. Three flipbacks all looking impressive with only modestly light darkening with age. These all solid, very clean with barely even a trace of any end burring or grimelines. Both sides impressive and attractive to the eye.

Top Edge: Little to fault bar tip rubs to the corners.

Bottom Edge: As above with a small chip almost on the corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Made with quite thick card so the manufacturing trim is not razor sharp, that is pretty much the normal on these types. Any thickening or burring is very light and faint. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine that could almost pass for new: solid, straight, uncompressed with the ends very slightly tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this still practically as white as when made.

Corners: Light to moderate corner tip chips or rubs, although only small, this the most wear on this impressive cover. All retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this mid-60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and looks far better. It’s the fragile tracing paper lined style inner that has only lightly aged with modest discolouration. The main reason for not grading higher is a thin on the top right corner area of the back. Barely a creased with just mild, natural crinkle, the lining fully intact as seen through two pristine window circles. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy modestly played on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very fine, light and faint. Just one on side two is a little thicker and can be seen with normal viewing without the aid of light. This has NO sound and does not penetrate the grooves. Few records within this genre, age, mode and popularity will escape a few light marks as the very least. Most are swathed in thick spindle marks on the labels, playing surfaces dulled and grubby with often many deep penetrating scratches. The groove wrecked by worn out pile-driver needles from the time. It all puts a very fine example like this into true perspective. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality HMV record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little, if indeed anything really to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
