Starting with 'Soldier on the Line', with its superb rising dawn effect done with keyboards and pertinent lyrics, Bob Catley's powerful vocals are just what a heavy rock need - cutting through and above an often solid wall of guitars.
The Led Zep sounding intro to 'The Spirit' with its lyrical acoustic guitar suddenly gets slapped aside by a wall of guitar, bass and drums. Interweaving through with acoustic guitar, harpsichord and keyboard, this song is by far the best, helped enormously by a production (by Jeff Glixman) that gives a clean and wide stereo that separates each nicely. Bob Catley again hits the high notes with a song of folky legend.
'We All Play the Game' has some Styx sounding bubbly keyboard twirling but the song is strong and Bob, again taking control with his dynamic vocals. 'The Teacher' is a strident march of an anthem and from the generous notes that come with the CD, I noted that 'The Lights Burned Out', a vocal power-house by Bob is a rousing live favourite.
I did follow up the LP with their next offering, 'The Eleventh Hour' but that just wasn't nearly as good. It is to my ears - and tastes - one of the best rock albums produced by a U.K band.
