MAGNA CARTA
Songs From Wasties Orchard

HERE WE HAVE A SUPERB UK VERTIGO (6360 040) FIRST SWIRL PRESSING (July 1971) OF MAGNA CARTA'S OUTSTANDING THIRD LP COMPLETE IN ITS ORIGINAL FOLD OUT ENVELOPE BOX SLEEVE AND ORIGINAL VERTIGO SWIRL INNER BAG

BEAUTIFUL COPY OF (in my opinion) THEIR FINEST RECORD WHICH SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL THROUGHOUT - TREMENDOUS DEEP, RICH AND WARM AUDIO WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LOUD CUT

THE LP HAS THE UK VERTIGO SWIRL LABELS
FIRST PRESS MATRIX: 6360040 1Y//1 11 3 / 6360040 2Y//1 11 5
AND IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL ENVELOPE-STYLE FOLD OUT BOX SLEEVE WHICH OPENS UP TO REVEAL A CRATE OF RED APPLES
THE SLEEVE IS DESIGNED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY THE BLOOMSBURY GROUP BUT THERE ARE NO ACTUAL PRINTERS CREDITS
COMES COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL POLY-LINED VERTIGO SWIRL INNER SLEEVE (DATE CODED '0371' - MARCH 1971)

GORGEOUS LP - ONE OF MAGNA CARTA'S HARDER TO FIND SWIRL ORIGINALS - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Magna Carta's third album was the first with guitarist Davey Johnstone on board, one reason for its subsequent immortality in collecting circles. Another is the extravagant packaging that accompanied the original Vertigo release. The gatefold sleeve was designed to open up like a box, with a layer of apples within. Add a crystalline Gus Dudgeon production and, of course, the popularity among collectors of the original Vertigo swirl label design, and Songs from Wasties Orchard emerges as a seldom seen but much sought-after gem.
For anybody familiar with the group's first two albums, Magna Carta's own style remained constant, a collection of beautifully stylized folk ballads sung and gently strummed with a warmth and versatility that saw the group endure (and, presumably, enjoy) constant comparisons to mid-period Simon & Garfunkel.
The addition of Johnstone to the original duo does little to derail those remarks indeed, his own musical versatility puts one firmly in mind of the Americans' more ambitious moments, as mandolins, sitars, and harpsichords dance behind Glen Stewart and Chris Simpson's magically melded vocal harmonies.
Highlights of the album are manifold. Songs from Wasties Orchard is one of those rare records where every song contributes something massive to the overall mood. But the (by comparison) rocking "Wayfaring," Johnstone's virtuoso "Down Along Up," and the evocatively reflective "Isle of Skye" are genuine milestones, while the curiously titled "Home Groan" closes the album with a shockingly electrified country-rocker that is hard to shake out of your head.
Songs from Wasties Orchard has rightfully been proclaimed Magna Carta's finest hour. Certainly neither of their subsequent studio albums can touch it, while its two predecessors sound positively tentative in comparison to the confidence that carries the dozen songs here. All are worth checking out, but this is where your journey should begin

Track Listing:
Side 1: The Bridge At Knaresborough Town / White Snow Dove / Parliament Hill / Wayfaring / Down Along Up / Country Jam
Side 2: Time For The Leaving / Isle Of Skye / Sponge / Sunday On The River / Good Morning Sun / Home Groan

LABELS: CLEAN and BRIGHT and UNMARKED with moderate spindle traces - the record has been well played but also very well cared for
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original DEEP, GLOSSY LUSTRE. There are some light sleeve removal hairlines but these have little audio consequence - the playback is SUPERB
VINYL Audio: CRYSTAL CLEAR, DEEP, RICH and BEAUTIFUL SOUND. Unbeatable depth and clarity on these first SWIRL presses simply not found on later issues. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps and barely any clicks/pops (really, hardly any) - SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY SENSATIONAL. The album plays to an very, very high standard with SUPERB AUDIO CLARITY, NO groove-wear or distortion and must be very critically graded as EXCELLENT+ for audio. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page). GREAT COPY
SLEEVE: The 1st issue sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition. Interesting design which opens up to reveal a crate of red apples on the central compartment which holds the record. The opening tab is intact with just a crease but NO rips or tears. The sleeve itself is UNMARKED with little edge wear (just some storage corner 'bumping' - please see photos). All text on the spine is CLEAR and BOLD - BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THIS VERY DELICATE AND EASILY WORN/DAMAGED SLEEVE
The original Vertigo Swirl inner sleeve - date coded March 1971 - is also in GREAT condition - CLEAN and FRESH with NO splits to any of its edges just some to-be-expected age discolouration
