Label/Format: Vertigo – original swirl format with matt, smooth surfaces. This album was not issued with the larger spiral logo on side two.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side two, the more revealing side, is still very white with no grubbiness and looks highly impressive (as does side one)

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Magna Carta were a London prog-folk act that made four albums for Vertigo, three of which appeared on the hugely collectable Spiral label. Their debut was on Fontana. This is quite a long album recorded in Amsterdam in 1971, it was the final one recorded on the Swirl format. A very fine set it is too, beautifully recorded in a threatre with lovely acoustics. A copy in very fine condition, the record plays lovely with a pressing worthy of the more delicate music.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and including the Spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A few fine marks and light creases, gentle rubbing near the edges and corner tips. Still generally clean with just gentle clues to age.

Cover Back: The back better still, the lack of ring wear always positive news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd tiny rub trace, little else.

Top Edges: Both straight with hardly any rubbing or wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Similar, with just a little light rubbing near the right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Just to be a little different, in the usual Vertigo way, the record enters on the front edge. The back is closed with a real tucked and folded edge that is straight and barely worn. The front entrance inside is also very sharp with very little wear. The back has a little mild thickening or burring as seen viewed end-on. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A little quite light rubbing near each end, no text was printed on this one.

Corners: Fairly small tip rubs with fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Just enough gentle reminder of age but it should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a very clean and still fresh looking Spiral lined inner. Just a little quite light darkening of the seam adhesive and little else. Two crisp undamaged window circles and the later style lining secure. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing as it needs to be with more gentle music. But some louder electric material near the end. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive Vertigo record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
