COMMENT: This Sydney-based studio group was put together in 1969 by Gus McNeil who'd earlier led Gus and The House and Gus and The Nomads. They recorded an album which achieved some success and a touring band was then formed to play the material from it. They split in 1970.

Angela Jones went on to Bootleg Family Band, whilst Dave Conners went on to Jade Warrior and Graham Parker and The Rumour.

The Train Song got further exposure on So You Want To Be A Rock And Roll Star, Vol. 2 and So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star (3-CD).

Gus McNeil: –(Company Caine- Source: MILESAGO)
By mid-1971, the band (Company Caine) had gelled into the "classic" lineup -- Gullifer, Russell Smith, Jerry Noone, Ian Mawson, Arthur Eizenberg and John "Ernie" McInerney. Original member Clif Edwards also returned at this time, but apparently only for the studio recordings. They went into Melbourne's TCS Studios in Richmond in July to record their legendary LP A Product of a Broken Reality. It was produced by Gus McNeil and engineered by John French, and released on the Generation label. McNeil was already something of a legend himself -- once dubbed "The Wild Man of Sydney Rock", he had had gained a considerable reputation as vocalist with seminal Sydney band The Nomads, where he was immediately recognisable by his long hair and bushy beard. (Coincidentally, in mid-1999 as this piece was being written, the Canberra Times published an old photo of Gus fronting the Nomads at a Canberra Day concert in Civic Square in 1967. Most of the members of Gus's band, The Nomads, went on to form highly rated Latin-rock group Pirana.)

Overseen by up-and-coming young producer David Woodley-Page The Happy Prince was recorded over four weeks in early 1969, and whatever its supposed artistic limitations, it was certainly a fine technical achievement. Australia lagged behind the UK and USA in access to new recording equipment, and although they were in common use overseas (the major American pop recordings had been cut on 8-track as far back as 1965) in early 1969 8-track was still about a year away -- the first was installed at Armstrong's in Melbourne in 1970. 4-track recorders, which were the standard in Australia at that time, had definite sonic limitations, as the Beatles had found when they began creating more complex music in the mid-60s. The process of "bouncing down" -- dubbing a completed 4-track recording onto one track of another tape -- demanded skill, care and the best equipment, otherwise the buildup of noise on the master tape would become unacceptable. But by a neat technical trick, The Happy Prince effectively became Australia's first 8-track recording -- a feat cleverly achieved by recording onto on two Scully half-inch, 4-track recorders which were electronically synchronised. This de facto 8-track method provided much greater scope for multitracking and overdubbing and a considerable improvement in overall sound quality.
