Arguable their best, this 1969 BRITISH classic first album is filled with good heavy guitar hammond organ driven heavy progressive rock. Rocking undeniably heavy for most of its running time, with the exception of the decent ballad "Come Away Melinda" and blues tune "Lucy Blues", Uriah Heep's debut album ...Very 'eavy...Very 'umble is a fine piece of early heavy doom-rock history. The intensely catchy organ-driving killer of an opener "Gypsy", "Walking in Your Shadow", slightly progressive "Dreammare" and "I'll Keep on Trying", and the hard/fuzzed jams of "Real Turned On" are all major highlights on this British beast.
The opening track, "Gypsy" is indeed "heavy", with a driving Hammond organ, a thumping beat, and an early burst of Mick Box's famous wah wah guitar soloing. "Come away Melinda" (also recorded by early UFO) is one of the very few covers the band has done. Their interpretation is quite stunning, with David Byron adopting various vocal sounds to distinguish between the two characters in the song. It's a beautiful, haunting number, with a peaceful message. "Wake up (set your sights)" also has a lovely soft conclusion which follows an almost jazz like opening section.
"Lucy blues" is a straight forward blues number, pleasant with cool bluesy guitar chops. The remaining numbers are indeed generally " 'eavy" with tracks like "I'll keep on trying" and "Dreammare" (a dream and a nightmare, get it?!) setting out the band's direction for future albums perfectly.
