Highly recommended (((minty))) old original VINYL first pressing of one of the great albums filled with raw & crude FUZZ-tone guitar, straight from the sixties... sometimes still unknown, an album that fits nicely right into any music collection concerning 60's garage be it crude, underground, lo-fi, basement, raw fuzz, etc... Without a doubt the best Link Wray album "Yesterday Today" was issued in small quantity and locally to Maryland, just like any of the old garage LP legends, ala labels such as 'Justice', 'Fredlo', 'Custom Fidelity' etc.
Link Wray was a wild boy, even considered himself a hippie, but he always kept the faith, he would never do drugs because of his religion. The ultimate garage guitarist, Link Wray influenced everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughn. His reverb drenched guitar tone, along with razor slit speakers gave him an unforgettable raspy echo of a sound that revolutionized rock guitar. Years before Ray Davies crushed the opening power chords of "You Really Got Me" with The Kinks, Wray was smashing through distorted numbers such as "Rumble" and "Night in the Big City". Wray and fellow guitarist Dick Dale are the most influential rock guitarists of all-time. Wray was one of many guitarists who claimed to have invented fuzztone. According to legend, Wray punched holes in his amplifier's speaker with a pencil to get his trademark sound. This sound is made by way of extreme overdrive in the old tube amplifier. This "bad" blusey sound was brought to its ultimate zenith when the large concert halls were filled with the big sound, this was how Cream and Led Zeppelin evolved to what became heavy rock's grandaddy. Link looked back at how he did not have huge Marshall amps like them, but little Silvertones, which were lucky to put out 30 watts. He also preferred off-brand electric guitars. Pete Townshend of the Who, a band legendary for having tons of equipment, praises: "He is the King; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and "Rumble," I would never have never picked up a guitar."
Link Wray was known for the legendary 'tune' called "Rumble", an amazing reverb drenched fuzz-guitar showcase that has all the elements of the crude lo-fi garage sound...it was banned in several markets for being "suggestive" and promoting "juvenile delinquency". Right up there in terms of the cool crude fuzzed guitar sound comes "Jack The Ripper" -- garage & beat bands all over the world tried to copy and cover it, though no one could ever equal the sheer intense style in the way Link Wray delivered the tune. "Yesterday Today" is filled with similar delights, making this, the Link Wray album to own. Hard to find especially this (M-) clean -- copies in collector circles were getting $100 some 20 years ago.
