CHICAGO's crowning achievement. It's mind boggling how good this band once was, and equally
mind boggling what happened to them just half a decade later. Acid-rock, jazz and classical composition meet in whirlwinds of creative frenzy! It goes all over the place but somehow manages to stay very focused and unified at the same time (tight as hell too!).One to listened to over and over and never get bored of it. Astonishing stuff, right up there with the first Magma album and Soft Machine's "Third" (both from the same year !).
In late 1969, Chicago got together at Columbia Studios in both New York and Hollywood with producer James William Guerico to record the follow-up to their ambitious first album, The Chicago Transit Authority. The songs that came out of these recording sessions became Chicago, known to their fans as Chicago II. At the end of the sessions, it was figured that there was enough quality material for a double album, thus making Chicago the band's second double-album in less than a year. Musically, this album picks up right where CTA left off - biting horns, great rhythm and beats, extraordinary melodies and the like, and blistering guitar solos from Terry Kath. This album also contains an idea which would permeate this and Chicago III, which is the idea of "suites", or groups of songs connected under a unifying theme. Here, there are three.The first suite is James Pankow's magnificent "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon", of which "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World" were both top 10 hits. It's worth noting that "Colour My World" finds all its beauty in its simplicity. That piano line with emotion that is conveyed is incredible.The next suite on the album is Terry Kath's "Memories of Love" which includes "Prelude", "A.M. Mourning", "P.M. Mourning" and "Memories of Love". This suite has a very large classical and jazz influence, which goes to show the depth of Terry Kath's love of music. Kath's vocals on "Memories of Love" convey so much emotion as to make you wonder whether or not all songs should have this kind of emotion. The last of the suites is Robert Lamm's "It Better End Soon", which consists of four movements, all of them phenomenal. Lyrically, the music shows Robert Lamm doing what he does best - social commentary. Musically, everyone gets a moment to shine whether it's Walt Parazaider's great flute solo in the second movement or Terry Kath's great guitar work through out, Peter Cetera's great bass lines, or Danny Seraphine's great drum fills. In terms of the non-suite songs, you have absolute Chicago classics such as all of side 1, "Fancy Colours" (dig the wind chimes), and the spirited and viscious "25 or 6 to 4". For our pick to click, that song is the most tremendous hit single they ever had. The horns blare, the bass and drums are pounding and amazing tight wah-wah pedal Terry Kath's guitar solo. One of the great,surprisingly strong albums by Chicago album. The work throughout encompasses everything one should know about Chicago in their early days.A: Moving In 4:06
