MINTY CLEAN...1969 original first pressing in thick gatefold cover ...one of the harder (and better!) to find Lp's on Zappa's old Straight Records label...
Yeah, so Tim Dawe appears on the scene in 1969 with this album "PENROD" on Frank Zappa's Straight label. Penrod is a superb debut, full of psychedelic folk rock with lots of organ, harpsichord and brilliant acid guitar. Tim Dawe has been compared to another same-era rocker, Tim Buckley, well-deservedly so. Among a full album of delightful grooves there are at least four masterpieces that are included -- Nite Train Home, Junkie John, Sometimes Alone (with strong percussion) and Didn't We Love. The highlight of this is the seven plus minute Junkie John. A great, understated Fender bass line introduces a wonderfully low key blues musing that builds up to some furious soloing... At other times a gentle, moody folk-psych sound, and elsewhere host to a most delicious twangy acid-surf guitar courtesy of Chris Kebeck. This 1969 Straight LP is a curious anomaly --Tim Dawe, a one-time Iron Butterfly member who'd go on to work with It's A Beautiful Day, has a warm, swooping voice that's somewhere between Tim Buckley (who producer Jerry Yester also recorded around this time) and Tom Rush. He brings a weirdly nostalgic air to “Junkie John” and other tunes about edge-dwelling heads, while Arnie Goodman's organ adds mod splashes all around. Understated and rather haunting stuff-with harpsichord!
