"Id Music" by The Third Rail. A psychedelic-pop adventure into denunciation of the advertising fuelled culture of 1960's America.
The single "Run, Run, Run" hit #53, but that is the highest The Third Rail would ever climb on the charts, loved by garage fans for it's inclusion in the famous 60's garage rock anthology "Nuggets". This is an album sometimes overlooked due to it's overwhelmingly pop sixties demeanor. The production of the record is outstanding, and should almost be seen as a stereo-type for how popsike should have been produced. All-in-all this is a fun album, a great listen that gets better with each spin. Song highlights include "From a Parachute," "Dream Street," and "The Shape of Things To Come." If you ever need help putting a smile on your face, this is the album to reach for. ID MUSIC is filled with perky, choppy rhythms, sing-songy chorus, and happy vocals and background harmonies. Lyrically it was a cut above the late-'60s poprock tunes the Third Rail's principals would later write, poking fun at the straight world rat race -- featuring a spoken mock-recitation of the New York Stock Exchange in which the figures quoted measured heart attacks, mental illness, ulcers, and general chaos rather than actual prices. The Third Rail were comprised of of Artie Resnick, his wife Kris Resnick, and Joey Levine. Artie Resnick was a Brill Building veteran who had co-written the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" and the Rascals' "Good Lovin'," while Levine was a teenager who had done a bit of recording and played in some local New York bands. They did this full album, Id Music, as well as a few other singles, in an odd and oft-awkward blend of late Brill Building-period pop-rock, early poprock, psychedelia, and trendily socially relevant lyrics, usually featuring Levine's high youthful vocals.
