1967 MASTERPIECE Emitt Rhodes COLLECTIBLE
The Merry-Go-Round
\ USA - A&M Records - SP 4132
TOP M- CLEAN original collectible:
Outstanding 1967 melodics infused (original) tunes by a garage band from Los Angeles called The Merry-Go-Round -- who had back to back chart top hits (number one smashes locally in California with 'Youre A Very Lovely Woman' & 'Live') but amazingly could not break out nationally...
"You're A Very Lovely Woman" certainly had to be an influence on Bryan MacLean's "Alone Again Or". There's not a weak track to be found here and it's as good, if not better than Lp's by Buffalo Springfield, Love or The Left Banke. As psychedelic and garage collectors all know success is not always a way to measure quality. This album is one of the prime examples of the case... Up there with albums of the era like 'Revolver' by the Beatles as well as '67 Lp's by Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, and Love ,,,all musically very close.
Gene Clark (Byrds) is singing harmony, but is not credited on the cover.
Higlights: "Live" - "Time Will Show The Wiser" - "Gonna Fight the War" - "Had To Run Around" - "You're Very Lovely Woman" & others are truly essential.
The album is largely penned by Emitt Rhodes, and the results were a stellar (and grossly overlooked) set of Beatles-influenced pop gems. Normally such a comparison would imply something shallow and highly derivative. Not the case this time around. On material like 'On Your Way Out', 'Had To Run Around' and 'We're In Love' Rhodes and company were clearly influenced by the Fab Four (particularly Paul McCartney's pop sensibilities, though the latter was a dead ringer for John Lennon), but these guys had more to offer than simply mimicking The Fab Four. Light psych ('Time Will Show the Wiser' showcasing an early backward guitar track), rural-rock ('Gonna Fight the War') and even Left Banke styled baroque influences ran through the material. Anyone under the impression these guys were simply a pop band need only check out 'Where Have You Been All of My Life' or 'Gonna Leave You Alone'. Bottom line is that this is one of those rare LPs where literally any of the 12 tracks would have made a dandy single. Full of killer melodies, first-rate harmonies and inspired performances, highlights abound.
Live Time Will Show the Wiser On Your Way Out Gonna Fight the War Had to Run Around We're in Love You're a Very Lovely Woman Where Have You Been All of My Life Early in the Morning Low Down Clown's No Good Gonna Leave You Alone
