Along with Queensryche, Fates Warning is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of progressive metal and are certainly one of the more influential progressive metal bands. Originally formed as Misfit, the band changed their name because of the punk band The Misfits. Fates Warning started out as a straight forward heavy metal band when metal exploded in the early 80s. Their earlier releases are still among my favorite as John Arch's unique vocals blending perfectly with the various melodies and time changes. Unfortunately they never hit it big like their fellow prog-rockers Dream Theater and Queensryche. Fate's Warning has also been plagued with line-up changes. Original vocalist was replaced by Ray Alder. Most of the various members of Fates Warning have been involved in various other projects besides Fates Warning as well. Original vocalist John Arch auditioned to be in Dream Theater after the band released Charlie Dominici. Dream Theater's Kevin Moore joined the band for a periord. Current bassist Joey Vera was originally from another classic Metal Blade band, Armored Saint. Drummer Mark Zonder has a cult following from his days with Warlord. Current vocalist Ray Alder formed Engine along with bassist Joey Vera. John Arch also released a solo EP with guitarist Jim Matheos.
