US Psych/Weird…rare solo album released after Yanovsky had left the Lovin’ Spoonful….which is probably the most interesting of all the Spoonful related albums. It’s a real eclectic mix…

Here’s the review from the CD issue: ‘After parting ways with the Lovin' Spoonful in 1967, co-founder Zalman Yanovsky -- better known to fans and friends simply as "Zally" -- surfaced the following year on his lone solo long-player Alive and Well in Argentina (1968). The effort returned the artist back to the early rock as well as country roots that had inspired him. Plus, he was able to modernize, if not counter the weepy and introspective direction the Spoonful was continually drifting toward as John Sebastian scored the easier listening "Darling Be Home Soon" and "Younger Generation." Bearing his trademark sense of humour -- and help from none other than Jerry Yester -- his replacement in the Spoonful -- and former bandmate Joe Butler (drums), the platter has the feel of a Lovin' Spoonful side project. The opening rave-up "Raven in a Cage" is preceded by a surreal composite of farmyard audio effects and "Oh, Canada!" -- the Canadian National Anthem. The song's heavier execution instantly recalls the Spoonful's "There She Is" and "4 Eyes" with just a hint of Yanovsky's jug band roots and overtones. With electric guitars wailing, the lethargic and definitely sardonic update of one-hit wonder Joe Jones' 1960 "You Talk Too Much" is Yanovsky at his irreverent best. Yet he manages to turn it into a commendable performance before the bottom literally falls out of the groove. Continuing with the trip down memory lane are impressive interpretations of the Floyd Cramer instrumental "Last Date" as well as the Bobby Day-penned "Little Bitty Pretty One" -- a hit for Thurston Harris in 1957. Yanovsky's impassioned and slightly out of tune vocal plea inoculates it with a shot of soul, while the thoroughly echoplexed chorus has a gritty lo-fi feel. The banjo-fralin' title track "Alive and Well in Argentina" adopts a rural flavor and melody comparable to Dave Dudley's 18-wheeler ode "Six Days on the Road." The lyrics demonstrate the artist's tweaked funny bone, not to mention a not-so-subtle reply to the question that Spoonful fans and reporters were asking in the wake of Zally's departure. Equalling if not surpassing the earlier covers are Yanovsky's raw reading of George Jones' divorce ode "Brown to Blue" and a honky tonkin' take of Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind." The upbeat poppish spin of John Sebastian's "Priscilla Millionaira" comes on the heels of the Lovin' Spoonful's version from Everything Playing. An attempt at full-blown (or, perhaps more accurately overblown) psychedelia is heard on the pseudo-heavy "Hip Toad." It stands in contrast to the overt mixture of trippy electric guitars and orchestrated jamming titled "Lt. Schtinkckhausen" -- ultimately sounding more like Frank Zappa than the Spoonful. The colourful jacket artwork collage is credited to Peter Max, while the dimestore novel-esque liner notes are courtesy of Carl Gottlieb -- a writer for the Smothers Brothers TV Show among numerous other credits.’

This is the original issue on Buddah with the colourful Peter Max layout….which is now rare and sought after with copies usually always $30/$40+. A nice copy.

Condition is M-/EX (cover/record), cover has a cutout hole.

For urgent/high value items, special delivery is reasonable for weights up to 2Kg, cost is £12 for values up to £500.

CDs & 7" Singles are £1.30 for the first then 50p each after. Thicker CD Box Sets are the same as LPs due to the size/weight.

For items outside of the UK, Royal Mail now use a pricing scale which increases for every 250g instead of 100g previously.

EUROPE: 6 GBP for the 1st LP (under 500g), then additional single LPs are 2 GBP each up to 5 or 6 LPs in total (under 2Kg).

2LP sets: 8 GBP, additional LPs are 2 GBP.

1st CD/Single is 4.50 GBP then additional CDs/Singles are 1.50 GBP each.

For larger orders over 6 LPs, it is now cheaper to send altogether in one package by courier rather than separate packages but depends on the destination.

Generally the basic cost for 7+ LPs (over 2Kg, under 10Kg) to most EU destinations is around 25 GBP plus any extra for insurance (50 GBP of insurance is inclusive, higher insurance works out at 1 GBP extra for every 20 GBP of value).

REST OF WORLD: 9 GBP for the 1st LP (under 500g), then additional single LPs are 3.50 GBP each up to 6 LPs in total (under 2Kg).

2LP sets: 12 GBP, additional LPs are 3.50 GBP each.

1st CD/Single is 5.50 GBP then additional CDs/Singles are 2 GBP each.

RECORD: PERFECT....AS NEW CONDITION, SO NO DETEORIATION IN THE SOUND QUALITY…..bear in mind that not all ‘new’ LPs are Mint because of the quality of the pressing etc....also SEALED/UNPLAYED LPs are sold as is.....

COVER: AS NEW CONDITION WITH NO OBVIOUS DEFECTS.......except maybe a deletion hole/cutout on a SEALED LP.

M- :

RECORD: SLIGHTY WORSE THAN M, LP may have several surface marks due to removal from it's sleeve etc....but certainly NO audible scratches....LP may have the occasional light crackle/hiss...but still in great condition.

COVER: SHOWS SIGNS OF BEING HANDLED WITH SLIGHT CREASING/WEAR...or may be a M cover with a very slight split seam or very slight showing of ring wear or a very slight sticker tear, but not all of these together.

EX:

RECORD: MOST REGUARLY PLAYED LPs KEPT WITH CARE FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY....LP may play with more hiss/crackle but not louder than the music......sometimes it may be a M or M- LP with one slight audible mark or a very slight edge warp but not affecting it.

COVER: SLIGHTLY MORE WEAR/CREASING/BENDING even some slight ring wear.....or may be a M or M- cover with a split seam(s) and minor sticker tears, but still nice.

COVER: PLENTY OF CREASING/BENDING/FADING/RING WEAR but still in one piece.

G: LP still plays through but is very noisy due to scratches/dirt etc....but still not totally trashed!!!
