Description
Up for auction is a foundational piece of guitar history: OKeh 8637, featuring the legendary Lonnie Johnson paired with "Blind Willie Dunn" the famous pseudonym for jazz pioneer Eddie Lang. Recorded in 1928, these sessions represent some of the earliest and most influential inter-racial recordings in American music.
Side A: Two Tone Stomp (Matrix 401338)
Side B: Have To Change Keys To Play These Blues (Matrix 401339)
Condition Report
• Visual Grade: The disc retains a decent amount of its original gloss. There are light surface scuffs and minor "needle runs" consistent with a VG (Very Good) grade on the VJM scale.
• Labels: The black and gold "Electric" OKeh labels are mostly clean with some spindle wear and light rubbing. The text remains sharp and legible.
• Playability: No cracks or deep chips were observed. There is a small surface pit/mark visible on the outer edge (Side B), but it does not appear to compromise the structural integrity of the disc.
Historical Significance
This record is a "must-have" for collectors of Pre-War Blues and Jazz Guitar. It showcases Lonnie Johnson’s sophisticated 12-string work against Eddie Lang’s rhythmic precision on the L-5. Copies of this specific OKeh "Race Series" issue in playable condition are increasingly difficult to find.
Shipping & Handling
I take shipping 78s very seriously. This record will be:
1. Placed in a non orgignal sleeve.
2. Sandwiched between four stiff cardboard squares.
3. Double-boxed: The sandwich will be placed in a smaller box, which is then suspended in a larger 12x12x6 box with ample padding (bubble wrap/packing peanuts) to ensure it arrives in one piece.
