Description
A great compilation from the blues label Alligator Records. This 6 volume set on VINYL LP, no longer available on LP, contains various historical performances by some of Chicago’s legendary men of blues, recorded between the years of 1978 and 1980. Each album features at 3 Chicago blues bands making up about 12 tracks per album. This vinyl set is in excellent to Very Good+ condition having been played at only a couple of times each. The covers are also in very good to excellent condition with great album art and design. If you are a collector of Blues on Vinyl or you like the warm rich sound of good blues played on a turntable then this set is worth obtaining.
- Vol 1. features the excellent guitar work of Jimmy Johnson and his band. Also included are 5 tracks by Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang (Howlin’ Wolf’s ex-saxman) This band includes none other than ex-Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin and on keyboards Johnny "Big Moose" Walker.
- Vol 2. has harmonica player Carey Bell and Lurrie Bell in Carey Bell’s Blues Harp Band. Magic Slim and the Teardrops also contributes 4 tracks along with a set by the late pianist Johnny "Big Moose" Walker.
- Vol 3. has Lonnie Brooks, Pinetop Perkins and Billy Branch in 3 separate sets.
- Vol 4. includes saxman AC Reed and the Spark Plugs, Scotty and the Rib Tips, and Lovie Lee with Carey Bell
- Vol 5. Lacey Gibson turns in a solid set, along with Big Leon Brooks on another and finally Andrew Brown on guitar.
- Vol 6. with Detroit Junior on 4 tracks and ex -Muddy Water guitarist Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson turning in 4 tracks.
A further note to this 6 volume set from Alligator Records. It was not released as a boxed set but only as a series of separate albums. Also on the back cover of each album are extensive albums notes by prominent blues reviewers such as Jim O'Neal co-editor of the Living Blues Magazine, Bruce Iglauer and Dick Shurman. Lots of historical blues information along with b&w photos. The print is very small.
