SOUND OF SOUL 104
Little Tommy BABY CAN'T YOU SEE b/w I'M STILL HURT
NORTHERN SOUL from the legendary stable of Mister Wiggles (aka August Moon), who produced and co-wrote this amazing dance number.
Clean, plays beautiful, VERY GOOD (plus) condition. (see the scans below)
The Sound Of Soul label, out of Richmond VA, was sparce on releases, but incredibly high in popularity, thanks in part to the efforts of the inexhaustable August Moon, who is also known by his earlier stage name of "Mr. Wiggles". He parlayed a few locally released singles into several reissues and lps, which still support him to this day from liscensing fees on sampled tracks and reissues worldwide. Moon has called me numerous times trying to get copies of this very record.... BABY CAN'T YOU SEE, because he dosen't even own one himself. He and I go back to the days when he was selling sealed Larry Saunders lps and Whole Darn Family lps for 50 cents each to get them gone from his warehouse. He didnt even WANT the singles then. Little did either of us know.....
That being said, it establishes this as one of the RAREST Northern Soul classics to come out of Richmond Virginia. Copies of "I'm Hurt" (SOS 100) turn up regularly, but usually even THOSE are trashed, and hard to listen to. This, the followup to "I'm Hurt", is the RAREST single on the label, and is the CLEANEST copy of Sound Of Soul 104 I've personally ever seen. It's been 5 years since I had another, and that one was sold to a very prominant author of a certain set of UK Soul Price guides. Two guesses....
The yellow paper labels are intact, showing very minimal wear. There is a slight ring in the center of the raised part of the label, as can be seen in these photos. Each side has a small LLL written on it. The A side (I'm Hurt) has a tiny label tear on the inside (seen in the photo). The labels are frequently found fallen off of S.O.S. records because of the polystyrene record, and Moon's insistance on using inexpensive paper (he was paying for it, remember). The red ink typeset is bold and clear. All in all, this is an attractive copy.
But, the most important thing is the record itself. It plays absolutely fabulously. From a visual standpoint, it would grade between a VERY GOOD and a VERY GOOD PLUS. Listening to it, it's easily VERY GOOD PLUS, no question. This being polystyrene, it's RARE to find them in anything resembling playable condition. This one is NICE!!!!!
Here is one to brag on. It IS a classic floor stomper. Impossibly rare in any condition, this is one that can be played with pride. The minimum bid is only set low to encourage early bidding. If it dosent generate bids early enough, I reserve the right to pull it for an outright sale. (I have plenty of interested customers in the states).
Because I have faith in this item realising it's true value, Postage and packaging costs will be INCLUDED in your bid, not added to it. There will be no reserve. I believe in playing fair.
Thankyou for your interest in this particular 45. I have hundreds of other desirable Northern singles, mostly in the $10 to $35 range. A few are priced higher. ( I have many more ranging from $1 to $6, but those aren't as sought after). If anyone is interested, I could compile a list. (I generally attend local record shows but haven't been in a while. )
Email me at soundzfun (at) aol (dot) com. I'll return a list as soon as I can get the records typed up. I regularly buy rarer records in the VA area, so I'm always turning up nice items. I have thousands of soul LPs, including many RARE items. I have about 75,000 singles, and about 50,000 lps in all categories.
I also included a scan of another nice Northern Soul single... KENNY GAMBLE (Epic 9636) STANDING IN THE SHADOWS. The flip is NO MAIL ON MONDAY. I'll be listing that one soon. Look for it. Looks a strong VERY GOOD, plays a strong VERY GOOD PLUS. It's on VINYL, NOT polystyrene. Vinyl is rare on early Epic singles!
