Description

Lights Out The Jackie McLean Quintet Prestige 7035 mono LP. Original Deep groove pressing with yellow fireworks label,  446 W. 50th St., N.Y.C. address, and RVG on the trail-off wax. Sidemen are +Donald Byrd, Elmo Hope, Doug Watkins, and Arthur Taylor. Tunes are: Lights Out\Up\Lorraine\A Foggy Day Kerplunk\Inding.

Condition - Graded Under Bright Light

Cover is a very strong VG+. The front cover graphics are beautiful and vivid. A touch of wear on the corners.  There is some light seam cracking across (not along) several inches of the upper right corner, otherwise the seams are very nice. No splits. The back cover slick is clean and bright with some very light surface wear, a few small digs on the left edge, and a small raised area on the right upper edge that may be a stain. There is some slight bowing on the right edges.  A beautiful example of this cover, you will not see many nicer.

LP is a glossy VG+ with some light sleeve wear, scuffing, and hairlines that are not feelable. The B side has small one needle-drop type scratch on the last track of side that is not feelable and a light 1 1/2 inch scrtach on the first two tracks, part of which is barely feelable and produces some light ticking.  Labels are beautiful with some spindle marks visible under bright angled light.   A solid example of this rare and desireable early Prestige.

I did play test this record and thought it sounded quite good with the classic 50's sound. Some background noise here and there but nothing that impacted the beauty of the music. No skips or any loud noises. This is very hard-driving jazz with McLeans powerful alto leading the way. Jackie's sax projects beautifully as well as the shimmering of the cymbals. My set-up is modest but effective - Theil 1.2 speakers, Scott 220 tube amp (mono setting), and a basic Pro-Ject turntable with a Grado Black cartridge. Of course, YMMV.

Overall not perfect or NM but a solid copy of a rare jazz LP that plays well with a beautiful cover. This copy should make some collector very happy. Check out my other auctions for more rare and interesting records. Grading

Grading is SS (still sealed), NM, VG+, VG. The myriad of grading systems on Ebay is a good indicator of the subjective nature of grading. In my opinion NM is close to perfect with one or two very minor flaws, VG+ is above average and collectable and VG is average used condition but probably the best choice for playing. I'm a collector and try to describe LPs as accurately as possible, the way I would want them described to me. The pictures should at least give a good indication of the condition of the covers and labels. Please see my seller feedback for comments on my grading. If you don't agree with how I'm calling a record that is your privilege but with all respect please don't bid.
