From Denver, Colorado, the Lee Arlano Trio works the Western half of the U.S. throughout the '60 and into the early '70s, circulating through the jazz club circuit with regular stops in Minneapolis, Jackson Hole, Anaheim, Las Vegas, and... Austin. And, when they're in Austin, the Trio calls the Club Seville at the Sheraton Crest Inn home. It's KAZZ-FM's live remote broadcasts from the Club Seville, hosted by future Sonobeat Records co-founder Bill Josey Sr., that introduces him to the group in 1966. Bill Sr., an avid jazz fan, loves the group's versatility, technical craftsmanship, and imaginative interpretations of jazz classics such as Big Noise from Winnetka and new hits such as Ramsey Lewis' jazz-rock crossover The In Crowd. Bill Sr., who plays big band-style coronet, knows, even as Sonobeat is merely a germinating idea, that he wants to do something more with the Trio.
The first Arlano sessions are held at the Club Seville in mid-July 1967, during the Club's off-hours. Intended to produce two tracks for a 45 RPM single, the sessions surprisingly yield more than a dozen slickly performed tracks. Importantly, since the tunes are all instrumentals, no vocal overdubs are necessary, making it relatively easy for inexperienced recording engineers Rim Kelley (Bill Josey Jr.) and KAZZ-FM chief engineer Bill Curtis to create a real-time mix of each song with just one pass to a quarter-inch 2-track Ampex 354 recorder. A jazz trio is far less challenging for Kelley and Curtis to record than a rock group because the instruments are all unamplified and, therefore, less likely to overload the circuits in Sonobeat's homemade 6-channel audio mixer. All that's required are two mikes on the piano, three on the drums, and one on the upright double bass. Although the mixer and recorder are situated only feet from the stage where Lee Arlano (drums), Andy Arlano (bass), and Sam Poni (piano) perform, because the instruments are unamplified, Kelley and Curtis can clearly hear the mix through their headphones. Since the session tapes also are the master tapes, the lacquer masters for the record pressing plates are made with first generation recordings.

I grade my LPs VERY conservatively and accurately under a bright light.  A description of the grading scale is below:
M: MINT - perfect.  vinyl is pristine / cover is flawless and/or sealed
M- : just under mint.  a very, very slight amount of wear on the cover or inaudible wear on the vinyl (surface wear from age, generally) but is otherwise flawless
VG+: vinyl / cover shows signs minor signs age or wear that are more or less undistinct / inaudible.
VG: vinyl / cover shows some visible wear / age but is overall in very good shape.  pops and clicks may be ever so slightly noticeable, but don't effect play or overall listening experience.
VG-: vinyl / cover shows some relatively apparent age but is in overall good shape and still a fine copy to own / play.  
G+: vinyl shows some heavy wear but overall sounds decent.  cover has some flaws or shows much age
G: vinyl is in pretty rough shape visibly but plays ok.  cover shows a lot of age or has some major splits or tears.  
G-: vinyl looks / sounds pretty rough.  cover has major condition issues such as water damage, large rips, etc
*a double "+" or "-" indicates that the condition is just above or below the neighboring grade

All my records are packed tight and securely in custom LP mailers between two 12" cardboard pieces with the vinyl removed from the covers to preserve their condition during shipping.
