Zep III - gotta love it. This could well be Zep's high tide mark. Absolute mastery of their trade. Great Songs throughout. Light and shade. It ticks all the boxes. Probably my favourite. Only problem? There's a lot of other folk out there that like it too. Net result - prices are HIGH$$$ for a great true 1st press. So, someone on a budget needs to think outside the box, a little, and compromise too. But a great copy can be found without breaking the bank!
Zep III hit the shelves in October 1970 and the earliest copies were pressed heavy with GRANT credits and a A5/B5 matrix. As per usual GRANTS credit were dispensed with pretty quickly and the 2nd version of the label surfaced [as you find on the example listed here]. Some of the earliest 2nd label copies arrived with the exact same A5/B5 matrix cut and are pressed just as solid. Now, this is precisely what we have here. So much so that the pressing weight and audio are on a par with an earliest 1st [from just a few weeks earlier]. So, if you want a decent early copy - and good value - these copies are definitely worth a look at. The one we have, here, is housed in an original 1970 cover - but it's the USA version. Original to the period,  but not to this specific UK pressing. Copies in this period are often found with German printed covers - so there is by no means one definitive cover version during this period anyway. The vinyl comes housed in an original poly-lined Decca inner sleeve.
Vinyl (Vg/Vg+) In great shape and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a few light marks and one or two semi-feelable marks. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly VERYGOOD+ level of playback with a couple of deviations. Intros and inbetweens are lovely and quiet and the audio comes across with great clarity. Not clean enough to hit the top grades - but it is a very appealing and impressive rendition none the less. Given the value angle - I'd argue - superb. Later copies don't quite seem to have the dynamics to carry off Zep in this period. On this copy you'll get the full gamut. The audio quality is superb by and large. The only track which is sub-par is 'SIBLY'. Expect some clicks and some crackles here and there in this track. There's a couple of jumps midway through 'Tiles'. It plays through no problem - just sounds like the band 'stumbles momentarily'. There's few more ticks midway through 'That's The Way'. Providing you can live with these issues the rest of the record plays a real treat. Weigh it up in the round - I'd argue this is a bit of a steal given how close you're getting to those original masters.
Cover (Vg+) Just to reiterate.. this is a 1970 USA original cover. Front and back look pretty clean without suffering to much ageing. The spinning wheel is fully operational. There's a sticker removal mark in the top right on the front. The interior looks great - no issues really. There's a bit of edge wear in places - nothing epic though. The spine looks very nice with just the catalogue number obscured. Overall the cover retains verygood rigidity.
Inner (Vg+) Light ageing no splits.
