Description
Songs of the Ghetto: Years of Despair Sung in Yiddish by Sarah Gorby (arr. by Jacques Lasry for Sructures Sonores Lasry-Baschet and orchestra). Philips Connoisseur Collection PCC 221
Scarce 1966 deluxe gatefold issue of Jewish ghetto, concentration camp, and partisan resistance folk songs of World War II, sung in their original Yiddish by Sarah Gorby and arranged and conducted by Lasry for performance on the legendary Structures Sonores (sound sculptures built by Bernard and Francois Baschet out of metal and glass) along with a traditional orchestra. The music is wholly unclassifiable, with the unique Structures giving the tragic Holocaust folk music an avant garde and ethereal sound. The blend of Structures Sonores and orchestra serves to highlight the more unusual resonances of the sculptures by contrasting them against "normal" orchestral coloring. A few tracks ditch the orchestra entirely or feature extended solo Structures Sonores introductions. The boisterous "Letzten Vaig," a well-known partisan fighter song, is a standout, and there are also less-often heard tracks like "S'Brent, Briderlech," about the liquidation of the Cracow Ghetto, or "Rifkele," about the Bialostock Ghetto. This unique US issue has an insert booklet with extensive notes about the ghettos by Arnold Falleder, many pages of beautiful illustrations by artist Zbigniew Jastrzebski, and the complete lyrics in original Yiddish with an English translation.
The Baschet Structures Sonores have been used in compositions by Andres Lewin-Richter, Ravi Shankar, Toru Takemitsu, and Jacques, Yvonne, and Teddy Lasry; they compare to the sound sculpture and homemade instrument work of Max Neuhaus, Harry Partch, Z'ev, Donald Knaack, Harry Bertoia, Alvin Lucier, Paul Panhuysen, Bill Fontana, etc. Jacques Lasry also released an lp on the legendary Patchwork French library label.
