Foss was a proponent of 20th century music his entire career, as conductor, pianist and composer He began his musical studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he began a lifelong friendship with fellow classmate Leonard Bernstein. He was musical director of Ojai Music Festival in California (principally oriented to modern works) , the director of the Buffalo Phil, Brooklyn Phil, and principal conductor of the Milwaukee Sym Orch, an important figure in modern music, under his leadership Buffalo became the world foremost orchestra for 20th Century music
