This record set has been cleaned and played through completely both sides on a Thorens Turntable as well as visually inspected under a bright halogen desk lamp to provide an accurate grading.
LP’s are packed outside their covers to guard against ring-wear & splits during transit and then placed inside a plastic outer protective sleeve for safe delivery.

CONDITION
VINYL : terrific / glossy throughout / high quality German vinyl / lightly played / Sides 1&2 are clean and Near Mint / Sides 3&4 show some light marks / a couple of light pops detected on Side 4 only …otherwise a superb clean sound throughout / very nice copy and rated EX+LABELS : a previous owners name penned on 2 of the 4 labels …otherwise clean
SLEEVE : magnificent / no ring-wear, marks or splits / the spine is intact / no creasing of any real consequence / a previous owners name along the entrance edge on the back however only very light and barely noticeable / a beauty !!
DESCRIPTION
Without doubt a very rare item for Bowie collectors as this Australian release combines the original and imported German 1973 Deram vinyl pressings along with the Australian manufactured (alternate) sleeve stamped with a unique & exclusive catalogue number …. in fact so obscure is this combination that no reference to DPA. 3017/1-2 can be found anywhere on any web-site and to that end this issue reportedly doesn’t exist …perhaps only a minor difference to some however for complete-ists this would be like unearthing gold !!In essence this is a 21 track compilation of 1966-1970 material from Bowie’s Decca/Deram period. The set itself is acutely interesting early music-hall style stuff from one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. While I'm tempted to state that this is for perhaps die-hards, there are definitely some great songs with beautiful melodies in this collection, including "Did You Ever Have a Dream," "When I Live My Dream, " and "In the Heat of the Morning." At first blush, much of the rest sounds to be in the vein of novelty music to the sophisticated ear, but a closer listen will reveal many of the song-writing strengths that stand out in Bowie's later work.
A terrific collectors piece in anybody’s language.

This is David Bowie's first album, plus nine non-LP tracks. It actually represents the first major stylistic shift of his career. He had spent the previous couple of years releasing British Invasion-style singles, without much success. Here, he jumped headfirst into a style that has, for want of a better term, been referred to as "music hall".In the UK, music hall hung on through the 1950s, so it was more of a direct experience for British rockers of the 60s. Consequently, many of them recorded occasional songs in a music hall style. These were often presented in a consciously campy way, but Ray Davies of the Kinks, for one, used music hall as a genuine, living part of his style. Bowie did something similar here, but in a more extreme and eccentric way. The result is a very odd album that can't really be approached from any conventional frame of reference -- it's one of those records that requires you to take it on its own terms, to enter into its world, or else to reject it as utter crap.
The fact is, some of the material does veer into the realm of the ridiculous, and for some reason, most of this seems to be concentrated on the first two sides... songs so precious that they make the Bee Gees sound like Van Halen; some of them almost Shatnerian in their lunkheaded goofiness. But then, around the middle of side B, something happens... the arrangements get sparser, the lyrics get less sophomoric and begin to show flashes of poetry, and the songwriting gets more compelling... the first signs of the artist Bowie would grow into. There are several songs about strange characters -- "Uncle Arthur", "She's Got Medals", the poignant "Little Bombardier", and the weird a cappella horror vignette "Please Mr Gravedigger". Others are just plain pretty -- "When I Live My Dream", "Silly Boy Blue", and "Come Buy My Toys", which has a bit of British traditional influence. But the real gems are two non-LP cuts -- "Let Me Sleep Beside You" and "We Are Hungry Men". The former is on a relatively standard "you're not a little girl anymore" theme, but is given a really nice treatment that screams "hit single". The latter is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi mini-operetta that anticipates the futuristic themes Bowie would explore from "Space Oddity" to "Diamond Dogs"….the Ziggy make-over bubbles underneath here if one is to but dig a little …
