The Complete Verve Recordings of

the Buddy DeFranco Quartet/Quintet

with Sonny Clark:

MOSAIC MR5-117 [Limited Edition– one of 7500 copies].

MOSAIC RECORDS 5-LP boxed set: Long out of print, I think this is a fair starting price, no reserve.

(Condition: records were played carefully and/or seldomly, most would be classified as near mint -- maybe a couple of sides VG++.  /\ the booklet is in excellent shape. The box’s corners are intact. The front photo is very good as you can see, no splits of extraneous writing.) ||

These are prime recordings of a 1954 working group led by the great modern clarinetist and featuring the young Sonny Clark, recorded that year. They worked with the confident battery of Gene Wright (b) & Bobby White (d). The quartet became a quintet in 1955 w/ the addition of Tal Farlow. /\

Most of the more than thirty, long-play tracks come from DeFranco’s Norgran or Verve albums: Jazz Tones (N-1068) / In A Mellow Mood (N-1079) / Odalisque (N-1094) / Autumn Leaves (N-1096) / Cookin’ the Blues (V-8221) / Sweet & Lovely (V-8224). |||

Even though the clarinet has made a minor sort of comeback in the past couple of decades or so, it’s still pretty much of a “loony aunt in the attic” kind of instrument as far as Bop and Hard Bop goes. This was especially true in the modern jazz of the 50’s. It’s easy to hear how unfortunate that was, and still is, in regard to DeFranco. Lots of great ideas, solos and great swinging in these sides and the fact that Clark is involved puts this way over the top for collectors. || [RE: BT] || Notes on mailing and mailing charges are in the following paragraphs. ||

Mailing: USA - $4.00 (includes Delivery Confirmation). International: most countries - $14.00 (box set) with no tracking or confirmation of delivery.

Packaging: I take special care with all of my album mailings; separating covers from records and enclosing both in a clear plastic record sleeve. I only use pre-made mailers; and with boxed sets or multiple items, I re-enforce package corners.

Returns: I will take returns in the case of accidentally mis-represented items, such as listing the wrong "issue" of an album or somehow missing a visible defect (both are extremely rare). I've been buying and selling on eBay since 1999 and have ALWAYS carried a 100% rating. So if by some chance there is a problem, it can be worked out.
