Before 1983's "Eliminator" album blew the doors wide open and made ZZ TOP MTV darlings, the tight nit trio was simply that "Little ol' band from Texas". Though they hadn't yet reached superstar status, ZZ TOP were anything but an unknown quantity in the rock community, having already released seven albums over a decade's time by the time they performed at the Grugahalle in Essen for German TV show "Rockpalast". "Live in Germany 1980" captures the band as they raucously introduce themselves to European audiences in-person at "Rockpalast" and to Eurovision viewers — first time on the continent and on TV — for the eminently likeable, hard-working and hard-playing threesome.

Appearing onstage at an unheard of 4:00 a.m. and being drowned out by audience pleas for encores by 5:30 a.m., this is ZZ TOP in its purest form. Billy Gibbons is on fire as not only a phenomenal guitarist but — along with definitive in-the-pocket drummer Frank Beard and the soulful voiced bassist Dusty Hill — a true bluesman. You'll marvel at the group's natural ability to bleed blues all over "Waitin' for the Bus / Jesus Just Left Chicago" (from 1973's terrific "Tres Hombres"), "Fool For Your Stockings", and Robert Johnson's "Dust my Broom", the latter two cuts taken from 1979's quirky-cool "Degüello". Also culled from the album for which the 1979-1981 tour was named were all-time classic "Cheap Sunglasses", ZZ TOP outfitted Isaac Hayes' song "I Thank You", and an outright musical oddity called "Manic Mechanic", which features Gibbons' at his — in the most complimentary of terms — weirdest.

Chances are that even those who've not yet heard the album know the rest of the story, one completed by "Rockpalast"'s Peter Ruechel who tells the tale of the appearance, the music, and an over-the-top stage setup. The act that fills space with more raw power and musical ability than most acts' with twice the membership bring it hot, barbecued, and Texas style. All the hits are here, including "Arrested for Driving While Blind", "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", "La Grange", "Tush", and "Heard it on the X".
