Church Street Blues Review by Thom Owens
Church Street Blues is essentially a solo album by Tony Rice, demonstrating his musical eclecticism -- the record features everything from contemporary folk to traditional country and blues -- as well as his nimble instrumental grace.
The occasional rhythm guitar of Tony's brother, Wyatt, is the only accompaniment on an otherwise unique solo album. Three of the tracks are up-tempo bluegrass instrumentals, with the remainder mostly 60s/70s folk and country. Rice seems to be playing some personal favourites, including songs by Ralph McTell, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton and Gordon Lightfoot. The title track, which Rice made his own, was written and first recorded by Norman Blake. It may be Rice's best known song. A natural baritone, he mostly sang in the high tenor typical of bluegrass and his vocals are as pure and clear as his picking. ("Pride Of Man", popularised by Gordon Lightfoot, was not written by him. Lightfoot's own "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" appears as the final track on the CD version only.)
