2. Band Lineup & Album Significance
Surfing With The Alien is universally regarded as the holy grail of 1980s instrumental guitar rock. Recorded on a modest budget, Satriani's sophomore effort achieved massive crossover success, becoming the first instrumental rock album to hit the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 in over a decade and earning a Platinum certification by the RIAA.
Beyond its musical legacy, the album is famously tied to its original Marvel Comics cover art featuring the Silver Surfer (drawn by John Byrne for Silver Surfer #1 in 1982). Because Marvel licensing fees eventually lapsed in later decades, reissues were forced to replace the cover art with a different image. As a result, 1987 original pressings with the Silver Surfer sleeve carry massive crossover demand among both music archivists and pop culture/comic collectors.
