The legendary MUDDY WATERS final studio release shows he really lost no power in his music.
Case in point; the opening song, "I'm A King Bee" gets things started on the right track and it just keeps going from there. Muddy would pass away in less than two years after this release.
This original issue still sounds edifying even now, highlighted by "Hard Again" and "I'm Ready," = ultimately worthy of the price alone.
The playing on this album features top-of-the-line blues and Muddy Waters himself is in excellent voice, even though he's fighting external problems such as his health and his manager's maneuverings to freeze out his sharp touring group at the time. (said manager was unwilling to talk about raising the pay of Muddy's band, causing friction and eventual departures.)
The chestnuts revisited have new life breathed into them; the newer choices are solid. Johnny Winter continues his smart production work in giving Muddy and company the closest anyone could get to the ambiance of the old Chess studio '60s audio.
This 1981 recording found Waters being produced by rocker Johnny Winter, who had brought Muddy back to form on the solid "Hard Again" album. Winter was smart enough to surround the great one with musicians who knew his music intimately -- regular band members like Calvin Jones, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson, and Bob Margolin dot the lineup -- and Johnny keeps his own excesses in check on a nice brace of tunes. While most of the tunes here are recruits of older Chess material, Muddy's versions of Slim Harpo's title track and his own "Champagne & Reefer" are worth grabbing this album alone.
Overall, a good one to add to the collection equally as are the classics on Chess.
