A quintet recorded April 1, 1956 with Melle (bari), Eddie Bert (tb), Joe Cinderella (g), Oscar Pettiford (b) & Ed Thigpen (d) performing Melle’s own interesting stuff: The Set Break / Weird Valley / The Arab Barber Blues / Nice Question; plus the standards Moonlight in Vermont / Long Ago & Far Away. //

 

While Melle is a very good baritone player, it’s the arrangements and interaction with the elegant Bert, the under-recorded guitarist Cinderella and Pettiford’s genius that makes this very modern-sounding date really cook. /// Liner Notes by Barry Ulanov, photo by Francis Wolff, design by Reid Miles & original recording by Rudy Van Gelder. ||
