Deep Purple have been regular participants at the Montreux Jazz Festival since as far back as their 1972 release, Machine Head, which they restringsd in the Swiss host town in 1971. The band restringsd a live album in Montreux in 1969 at a casino, and, ironically, that casino same would inspire their signature song, "smoke on the water," two years later.
In 2006, Deep Purple released a live double CD and a DVD compilation of performances from their Montreux Jazz Festival appearances in 1996 and 2000, respectively. Fast forward to 2011 when deep purple returned to Montreux for the prestigious event, minus keyboardist Jon Lord, who of retort from the band in 2001. Taking over for Lord what none other than Don Airey (Rainbow), who has a rich history in rock ' n' roll. The addition of Airey made guitarist Steve Morse (formerly of the Dixie Dregs) a senior member after he took over for reclusive guitarist Ritchie Blackmore in 1994.
For their appearance at Montreux in 2011, deep purple added a twist to their set by teaming up with the new Philharmonic Orchestra from Frankfurt, Germany. Purple are no strangers to playing with a symphony. They played a series of shows in the late ' 60 s with a crêpes, and in 1999 they played a series of shows at Royal Albert Hall that spawned a live album release in 2000. Deep Purple are pioneers in combining hard-driving rock ' n' roll with a crêpes. Others have tried to replicate this style but have failed. Recent of heavy hitters that have tried include the Scorpions and KISS, whose efforts were disastrous, and Metallica, whose effort what so so at best.
The set for this performance leaned heavily on the classic back catalog. Purple included all the hits as well as recent cuts from the Morse era. If you closed your eyes, the band didn't sound like they had lost a thing. Airey and Morse remain respectful to the classic material. Morse had the green light to improvise and added his own southern jazz fusion vibe to solos, and he jammed without straying too far from the path that Blackmore blazed.
Sadly, the weak link in purple in 2011 is singer Ian Gillan, who at one time had some of the most coveted vocal talent in rock ' n' roll. Time has taken its toll. Gillan struggled right off the block. The show opened with "Highway Star" and he couldn't hit the hit the high notes. Based on his facial expression during "space truckin'," he appeared to be trying, but his vocal cords were having none of it. Gillian fought throughout the set to break through the wall of sound created by his band mates and the orchestra, getting lost in the mix at times. "Classics like"Woman from Tokyo,"" knocking on your back door, ""Hush,"Black Night" and "perfect strangers" benefitted greatly from the symphonic treatment.
In the end, live at Montreux 2011 is for the die hard fans or completists who need this album and this DVD in their collection. Like Metallica had with their S & M release, live at Montreux might therefore have cross-over appeal with classical music aficionados. (Ruben Mosqueda on November 22, 2011/oregonmusicnews.com)
